FC United slump to sixth successive league defeat at home to AFC Telford

FC United slumped to their sixth successive league defeat on Tuesday night by losing 3-1 at home to bottom club Telford United in front of 2,781 supporters.

The Reds were 2-0 down at half-time but although Tom Greaves scored in the 74th minute to give FC United hope, it proved to be little more than a consolation as David Hibbert sealed the victory 10 minutes later.

The match was delayed by half an hour due to Telford getting stuck in traffic but once proceedings got underway the visitors showed no signs of being flustered by their late arrival. If anything, the extra wait seemed to have got the The Bucks pumped up.

Sean Clancy put them ahead inside 20 minutes with a close range volley, connecting with a Dwayne Samuels cross. Although Sam Sheridan looked to get United back into the game with some probing balls and free-kicks into the box, the Reds looked out of sorts.

Down at the other end, Telford continued to press and it came as little surprise to anyone when Robert Paratore made it 2-0 moments before the break with another close range finish.

Into the second half and United were desperately trying to find a way back into the match. Sheridan was once again the driving force but was unable to create anything more than half chances. He flashed a free-kick wide just after the hour mark and it was once again looking like one of those frustrating nights for the Reds.

However, Karl Marginson’s side looked like they might have just turned the corner when Greaves bundled the ball home after goalkeeper James Montgomery flapped at a looping ball into the box.

The glimmer of hope was to be short lived as Hibbert took advantage of more shaky defending by the home defence to make it 3-1. The big striker latched onto a punt up field by Montgomery to head home Telford’s third and final goal in their first away win since April.
