FC United slip to defeat at Stockport Town

FC United continued their pre-season programme with a 3-2 defeat against Stockport Town.

FC opened the scoring on two minutes when a ball over wasn’t dealt with by the home defence, Kane Dean got in ahead of keeper Morgan Piper, flicked the ball over his head and rolled into the empty net. A few minutes later, Michael Donohue smashed the ball against the post after a fine solo run.

On 23 minutes, FC had the ball in the net again when Donohue played in trialist Eddie Brown who finished well only to see the flag up for a very close offside decision.

Just before the half hour, the home side had their first clear view of goal when Max Dickov went through, Ollie Martin saving well and gathering when the ball bounced back off Curtis Jones.

Five minutes later, the score was levelled when the ball was played into Lee Grimshaw who finished well. With 43 on the clock, Town took the lead when Neal curled the ball into the top corner.

FC started the second half well, Paul Ennis rolling the ball wide. On 52 minutes, the Reds were level when Fin Sinclair–Smith used his pace down the right and crossed to Ennis who saw his shot saved, the ball dropping to Luke Griffiths who finished well.

On the hour, Stockport nearly regained the lead when Taylor Dyson smacked the ball onto the upright. This provoked a flurry of FC chances with Jack Lenehan and then Nathan Burke twice shooting at Piper.

On 83 minutes, FC United had a great chance to take the lead when Griffiths was challenged unfairly in the box, Griffiths himself took the penalty but blasted it wide.

Three minutes later, Sharif Islam was played through and finished well past Lenny Fieldhouse to win the game.

A second pre-season defeat for FC United but a much better performance compared to the midweek game at Thackley.

Report by Steven Wood

Man of the match: Luke Griffiths. Tasked with a role higher up the pitch, he was involved in most good things from FC.
