FC United travel to Grantham Town on Saturday afternoon knowing that a win could put them on top of the Evo-Stik Premier Division table.
The Reds are currently in fifth place and just one point behind leaders, Ashton United with no club managing to win more than two of their first four games in what many feel will be a very tight competition this year.
With all the top five teams playing away from home on Saturday, it’s likely that points will be dropped and United will be hoping they will be in a position to capitalise by getting a result in Lincolnshire.
Manager Karl Marginson is not concerned about league standings just yet though. He said: “It’s very early days to be looking at league tables but the main thing is I’ve been delighted by our performances. We’ve played football in the right way and the attitude of the players has been absolutely superb.
“It’s not easy leaving such good quality players out of the team but they know I make honest decisions for the good of the club. The great thing is when players are being selected or coming off the bench, they are all performing really well and staking a claim for a place in the team.???
Unfortunately, two players who can’t stake a claim tomorrow are midfielder Dave Birch, who will be absent due to work commitments, and young centre-back Tom Davies who has a sore back. However, Margy is confident United have the strength in depth required to deal with the situation.
He said: “We’ve got the squad to cope we’ve these kind of things. Andy Pearson (made his debut last week) brings a wealth of Conference football experience from Hyde and Guiseley and he is naturally a centre-half, so I expect he will play there on Saturday.???
Margy admitted that he is hopefully of bringing in another new signing to the club but is waiting on international clearing before saying anymore, so watch this space.
United will be confident going into tomorrow’s match having beaten Grantham twice last season, 4-2 and 1-0, in our first ever meetings with The Gingerbreads. But, as ever, anything can happen.
Get yourself to that football ground and help the lads leap to the top of the table. Bring on United.
