Education courses in Sport and Active Leisure

Education courses in Sport and Active LeisureStarting in October 2014, FC United are offering accredited education courses for young people, aged 16 to 18 years, in Sport and Active Leisure that will be taught by qualified and experienced tutors along with opportunities to gain valuable experience working as part of a fans-owned football club with an award-winning community programme, and there are still a number of places available for young people to get involved.

The club’s objective is to offer young people courses in Sport and Active Leisure which are every bit as good as those available at local colleges and have the added benefit of offering young people practical hands-on experience at our football club and other local community organisations in order that our young people can acquire communication, team-working and leadership skills to help their personal development and improve their career prospects.

The education courses will be offered at three levels to allow learners to choose the level that is appropriate for them depending on previous academic achievement and courses will be delivered at Manchester Creative & Media Academy during the first term and from January 2015 courses will be delivered from FC United’s new stadium at Broadhurst Park.

The course offer includes:
  • Level One Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure
  • Level Two Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure
  • BTEC Level Three Diploma in Sport
  • English and Maths skills will also be offered to learners who are yet to achieve a Level 2 (GCSE Grade C & above or equivalent) in these subject areas

Learners that enrol on a course with FC United will also be given the opportunity to choose an additional strand to follow, based on their own development needs. The three strands available to learners include Community Coaching alongside FCUM Community Team, Boxing and Fitness to be delivered by Moston and Collyhurst Boxing Club, and Football Academy delivered by FC United’s Academy Coaching Team.

FC United Community Education Manager, Robin Pye, said "The club are excited about the opportunity to educate and upskill young people on full time education courses. All of our learners will become part of the FC United ’family’ and will receive in depth support and guidance from a team that have the time to really get to know them. This will allow the club to make sure all of our young people have the opportunities to get the experience they need to develop their skills and receive good quality advice to enable them to progress onto other courses, university and into employment."

Additional benefits for young people that sign up to an education course include overseas youth exchanges, event management at FC United matches and Moston and Collyhurst Boxing Club, art and media projects relating to the club, enterprise projects relating to the club and work experience placements at companies and organisations that sponsor the club.
