FC United beat Enfield Town to win the Brian Lomax Trophy

FC United beat fellow fan-owned club Enfield Town 3-1 to win Supporters Direct’s Brian Lomax Trophy in style at Broadhurst Park on Saturday afternoon.

Two first half goals from Cedric Main put the Reds in the driving seat before Regan Linney added a third with 20 minutes to go. The visitors kept going though and scored a consolation goal through Ebrima Sawaneh with five minutes to go.

Main was the main man once again, bossing the show throughout. It took him just three minutes to get United off to the perfect start. A good interchange down the right between Tre Pemberton and Charlie Ennis saw Ennis cross the ball across the six-yard box where Main was waiting to slam it home for 1-0.

The Reds were too hot for the visitors to handle in the opening stages and it was no surprise when they doubled their lead on 25 minutes. Jordan Simpson played a peach of a 50-yard throughball to Main and he skilfully took the ball down on the edge of the area before firing it home for 2-0. Enfield did have their chances though and moments before halftime Dan Lavercombe did well to push a close-range shot at the back post out for a corner when it looked goal bound.

The match was more even in the second half with Enfield determined to get back into it, but a ruthless FC United put the game to bed with 20 minutes to go when they scored a third. Main turned provider as he dazzled down the left wing, getting to the deadball line, before crossing for substitute Linney to cushion side-footed volley home for 3-0 from no more than eight yards out.

With the result in the bag, manager Neil Reynolds had the luxury of bringing on a couple of academy players – Jack Bennett and goalkeeper Mason Walker. Unfortunately, for Walker his first task was picking the ball out of the net but there was nothing he could do about the goal as he was left exposed by a defence-splitting pass and a great finish by Sawaneh to make it 3-1.

Enfield were worthy of their goal but it was too little, too late from the visitors as FC United already had one had on the Brian Lomax Trophy by that stage. A few minutes later, Malcolm Clarke, Chair of the Football Supporters Federation, presented captain Michael Potts with what is hopefully the first silverware of the season.

Website man of the match: Cedric Main. Two goals and an assist during another all-conquering performance.
