FC United suffer first defeat of pre-season at Salford City
FC United were handed their first defeat of the pre-season campaign as the Reds went down 2-1 to near neighbours Salford City at Moor Lane on Saturday.

The Ammies are preparing for their first full-time season this year and the seemingly obvious choice for automatic promotion this gave a very strong performance in the first half.

The home team took the lead after just nine minutes when Mani Dieseruvwe powerfully headed past Lloyd Allinson in the FC United goal.

Allinson had no chance with Salford’s second goal on 20 minutes either, as Richie Allen lofted the ball over his head and into the back of the net from outside the box.

It’s fair to say that the FC United players found opportunities hard to come by against a well organised and powerful defensive unit. But the players showed great resilience to keep going throughout the game, something we’ve maybe lacked a little of in similar situations over the past few seasons.

In true pre-season style the second half lost a lot of the energy and tempo, with multiple changes and players still three weeks out from the beginning of the season perhaps getting a bit fatigued towards the end of the game.

However, there was a moment of brilliance on 86 minutes as FC United found the net late on when Tom Greaves acrobatically hit an overhead effort into the Salford goal. It was the goal that the dogged performance probably deserved.

The defeat was the first in four pre-season games for Margy’s men, who now go to the familiar surroundings of Bower Fold on Tuesday evening to face Stalybridge Celtic.

FC and Salford will have to wait until the festive period to meet each other again this season, with both games coming within the space of a week on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
