Match Report
For all FC United fans with a keen eye for our footballing history, the name of Leigh RMI evokes heady memories of that first game in our first summer and although Hilton Park and the men’s club have both slipped from existence into the annuls of local football history, Leigh RMI’s name lives on through its thriving women’s team.

Leigh RMI Ladies FC ply their trade in Division 1 North of the NWWRFL and were poignantly drawn at home to FC’s Women from Division 1 South in the first round of the league cup and in contrast to the summer sun of 2005, the 2015 encounter unfolded in the teeth of swirling gales interspersed by bouts of driving rain as the home side got the tie underway.

As early as the third minute United signalled their intentions with Beth Tattersall pouncing on a Kirsty Chambers cross squaring to Shellby Wolstencroft who placed her shot just wide of the upright. However, within two minutes FC had the lead as Tattersall showed a clean pair of heels to the Leigh high line racing onto a ball over the top and as keeper Becky Baldock hesitated, United’s number 10 slotted the ball home comfortably.

Just before the quarter hour Jade Parker burst through midfield heading wide right before delivering an excellent cross which was cleared for a corner. Chambers worked a short corner routine and took the return pass from Charlie Evans as she surged into the area unleashing an arrow of a shot across Baldock and into the top corner to double the lead.

United dominated the majority of the half with Leigh enjoying a spell of possession and concerted pressure winning a corner on 43 minutes which was well fielded by returning keeper Mary Priestner and the reds went in at the break leading two goals to nil.

United started the second half on the front foot kicking with the strengthening gales and Parker added to the lead on 56 minutes as Adora Yau and Leah Hartshorne showed tenacity in possession in midfield spreading the ball wide to Tattersall who in turn fed Aimee Cooke. Cooke spotted a well timed incursion into the area by Parker playing the ball into her path for the midfielder to fire past Baldock into the bottom corner; an excellent team goal.

Now fully in the ascendancy, United pressed their advantage on the hour as Wolstencroft gambled on a ball over the top into the driving rain; the striker taking advantage of defensive hesitancy slotting her shot beyond the stranded keeper.

The scoring was wrapped up in bizarre fashion on 65 minutes as Hartshorne found Tattersall wide right with the winger outpacing the defence and her own forwards as no colleague was able to make the penalty area to receive her cross. However, unwittingly, a defender sliced her clearance back to Tattersall who fired goalwards under pressure from a very tight angle, wide right. Tattersall’s looping effort saw Baldock flap the ball against the inside of her near post and over the line.

In front of Priestner, Fran Davies, Jess Tonge, Yau and Cooke held firm as Leigh, to their credit never gave up and United saw the tie to a conclusion scoring five and keeping a clean sheet.

The reds return to league action this coming Sunday as they visit Altrincham Ladies for the second time this season with the first game being abandoned back in September due to a serious injury to the hosts’ keeper. Kick -off is 2pm at Mersey Valley Sports Clubs Banky Lane, Sale, Manchester, M33 5SL. Get yourselves to that football ground.
