Match Report
In only their second game of 2015 FC’s women’s team beat Heyside 17-1 with a double hat-trick from Captain Kirsty Chambers, four from Feiruz Abdullahi, braces for Shellby Wolstencroft and Beth Hayes and single strikes from Charlie Evans, Leah Hartshorne and debutant Hannah Dobie. With leaders Beechfield United held to a draw by Reddish North End, the FC victory once more sees the Reds top of the pile in The Greater Manchester Women’s Football League Division 1.

Lingering, freezing fog was no barrier to a good, though fragmented game that saw a first half lasting 70 minutes due to a couple of unfortunate injuries; first to Heyside keeper Vickki Cooper (knee injury) on 31 minutes and after a 20-minute break in play our own Leah Hartshorne landed awkwardly after an aerial challenge and was despatched to A&E; later being confirmed to have sustained a sprain and soft tissue damage on her foot that will see her sidelined for a while. We wish both players a speedy recovery.

Heyside won the toss and got the game underway and immediately won a free kick on the halfway line which was floated over the FC backline into the path of Alix Sephton who was just offside. From the ensuing free kick Jess McCarrick knocked the ball into Abdullahi who squeezed a pass wide to Chambers who floated a deep cross-cum-shot to the far post inadvertently lobbing a stranded Vickki Cooper to fortuitously open United’s account on two minutes. There was nothing fortuitous about Abdullahi’s first of the afternoon two minutes later as she jinked past several defenders and clipped her shot beyond Cooper at her near post.

Heyside tested the United defence with Sephton breaking forward but soon finding herself swamped by red shirts as Jess McCarrick and Nicole Worthington combined to clear the danger. Sephton and her strike partner Ella Milovanovic were causing problems going forward with Worthington covering well to prevent Milovanovic unleashing a shot at the expense of a corner. Once again, Worthington and McCarrick cleared well and United won a corner of their own following a swift counter up field. Evans rose well with the keeper from the set piece and her header squeezed in at the near post on the quarter hour for a 3-0 lead.

United’s fourth came a minute later after Wolstencroft won a free kick in the centre circle. Shauna Ward lofted the set piece goal wards and Wolstencroft saw her effort well saved only for Chambers to follow up and slam the ball home from a few yards out. Chambers’ hat-trick came on 22 minutes as Abdullahi fed the ball inside from the right to Hartshorne who squared unselfishly to her captain who in turn despatched a low shot passed Cooper into the bottom corner. Two more goals followed in quick succession on 25 and 26 minutes as first Abdullahi powered past the full back to slot home from close range and almost scored herself again a minute later but saw her shot saved and from the rebound, laid the ball back to the edge of the area for Hartshorne to loft a sublime effort into the roof of the net.

From the restart, Abdullahi once again found herself with the keeper to beat and this time Cooper made a brilliant one-handed save deflecting the ball onto her bar with her defenders smothering Evans’ follow up. Heyside broke forward and earned another corner which Mary Priestner dealt with releasing Wolstencroft on a swift counter. Her deft, defence-splitting pass into the path of Chambers was superb, arguably the best of the game, and the captain made no mistake in despatching her fourth and FC’s eighth goal of the half on the half hour. Just a minute later, a collision between Abdullahi and Cooper caused the keeper to land awkwardly and injure her knee resulting in a 20-minute break in play as players and supporters alike did their best to keep warm whilst Cooper received treatment. Heyside’s Natalie Gregory took Cooper’s place in goal and eventually, referee Kevin Moore got the game underway again only for Hartshorne to suffer a similar fate to Cooper a few minutes later after landing awkwardly following an aerial challenge to be replaced by Amy Battel.

On 45+23 minutes Heyside saw some reward for their attacking endeavours as Sephton ran onto a ball over the top and half volleyed over the advancing Priestner to spark Heyside celebrations and appreciative applause from all present for a well taken goal. A couple of minutes later and referee Moore blew for half time.

After a brief break, the second half was more conventional in terms of time keeping and was just 21 seconds old when Wolstencroft grabbed her first of the afternoon from close range after excellent work down the right between Hayes and Evans saw Chambers collect Evans’ deep cross beyond the far post and square back to Wolstencroft to tap home from inside the six-yard area. Double figures were achieved just three minutes later as once again an Evans’ cross evaded two red shirts and all defenders to be powered home at the far post by Chambers for her fifth of the afternoon and her double hat-trick was sealed on 52 minutes as she burst onto an excellent cross-field pass from Hayes shooting early, hard and low across Gregory and into the far corner with a trademark finish.

There was good work through the midfield by debutant Hannah Dobie as she played in Wolstencroft who rounded the advancing Gregory to slot home into an unguarded goal from 15 yards on the hour. Evans, whose endeavour all afternoon down the right was superb, latched onto an excellent cross from Jess Tonge and was unlucky to see her effort narrowly evade the far post. Despite the mounting goal tally against, Heyside never once let up their endeavour and almost doubled their total with 20 minutes remaining; a corner was flicked goalward, beat Priestner but fortunately not Battel who cleared the danger from the goal line.

United broke away through McCarrick who moved through midfield before passing into the stride of Abdullahi who used her blistering pace to leave the Heyside defence stranded as she slotted the ball past Gregory before repeating a similar feat on 75 minutes to notch her fourth and FC’s 14th of the afternoon. On 78 minutes a poor goal kick landed at the feet of Hayes who instinctively returned the ball with interest from 25 yards as her shot cannoned off the bar bouncing over the line off the back of the back-peddling Gregory.

Inside the last 10 minutes United scored the game’s final two goals as first Dobie controlled a low drive from the edge of the area into the bottom corner before Hayes curled a superb shot home from 18 yards in the 90th minute. Following the restart the referee brought the game to an end and FC United were once again top of the league.

Report by Rob Fullen

Player of the game: Jess McCarrick – very assured performance at the heart of United’s defence alongside Nicole Worthington. Jess covered well and prompted many attacks that led to several of the goals scored today whilst playing her part in keeping the dangerous Heyside forward pairing of Alix Sephton and Ella Milovanovic at bay. A deserved mention also for winger Charlie Evans, who enjoyed one of her most effective FC performances of the season and notched a goal in the process.
