FC United move three points from the play-offs after win over Witton

FC United continued their push for a play-off place in the Pitching In Northern Premier Division with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Witton Albion at Broadhurst Park on Saturday afternoon, courtesy of goals in each half from Aaron Morris and Josh Galloway.

A crowd of 1,867 watched on in the rain as the Reds put in a professional performance to pick up another three points and close the gap on the chasing pack. The match was given the go-ahead after a pitch inspection, but it took both sides a while to get a feel for the game as the laying surface was absolutely sodden.

FC United were the brighter side, but it took until the 37th minute to break the deadlock. Morris flashed the ball into the net after getting his head on a peach of a corner at the Lightbowne Road End.

FC went into the break a goal to the good, and they would come out firing for the second period, looking for that killer second goal. It would take them only four minutes to put Albion under pressure once more as right-back Andy Hall headed straight at the ‘keeper.

FC would indeed get that second goal, and in good style, 11 minutes into the second half. Leeds United loanee, Galloway would show just how dangerous he is with this strike, as he took hold of a loose ball on the edge of the 18-yard box, controlled it brilliantly and stroked it low into the bottom right corner for 2-0.

After FCs second, the game became scrappy again with the surface churning more and more. Galloway was forced off with an injury with 10 minutes to go and replaced with Harry Wilson. It only looked to be a knock and hopefully nothing too serious.

After the game, manager Neil Reynolds said: “Credit to the ground staff to get the game on, credit to the referee and the officials for letting the game play. I’m looking down on it now and it looks like it’s had a really heavy 90 minutes, but I’m sure we’ll do everything we can to get it right for Tuesday night.

“We have a mission now. We have a plan. We know what we have to do between now and the end of the season. I’m not always going to be everyone’s biggest fan because the lads in the dressing room want to play every week, but for me it’s about picking the side that I think is going to win us the game.

“The last 10 weeks it has worked, but I’m going to have to keep doing it between now and the end of the season because we’ve got big games coming up and the more we keep winning, the closer we get to the play-offs.”

Next up for FC United is a battle under the lights as we welcome midtable Lancaster City to Broadhurst Park on Tuesday night.

Website man of the match: Josh Galloway. He was always a threat when on the ball, looking forward all the time, and his well taken goal was richly deserved.
