Match Report
FC United made it three wins in a row with a 3-0 victory over Whitby Town at Gigg Lane on Wednesday night with a screamer from captain Kyle Jacobs and a brace from Ben Deegan.

The scoreline may give the impression of a routine home win but both sides could have had a hatful of goals in an extremely open contest. The upright prevented Deegan from grabbing a hat-trick in the 90th minute and goalkeeper James Spencer plus the woodwork came to United’s rescue several times.

The opening 15 minutes were fairly cagey, giving no indication of what was about to come. United had been limited to long range efforts and were patiently trying to unlock the Whitby defence when Jacobs received a cross-field ball on the right wing from Richard Battersby. The full-back took one touch before unleashing a rocket past David Campbell from 30-yards out.

If the 1,408 in attendance thought Jacobs’ finish was good, they soon had another contender for FC United’s goal of the season. The Reds cleared a Whitby corner at the second attempt on 25 minutes and Lee Neville managed to poke a ball through to Michael Norton who laid it back to Battersby.

Sensing Whitby were stretched, Battersby tried to play a long ball forward for Deegan but Andrew Leeson cleared into space. However, Deegan pounced on the loose ball and executed an audacious first time chip from 25 yards which rose over Campbell and came back down to nestle nicely into the back of the net for 2-0.

United were looking good and Spencer barely had a save to make in the first half. Roca could easily have had two goals before the break. On 32 minutes he jinked his way through the Seasiders’ defence on the left and then dragged a cross-cum-shot wide of the back post. And on the stroke of half-time his shot was deflected over the bar by Leeson after good work by Deegan and Norton.

Whitby nearly found a way back into the game less than 10 minutes into the second half. Spencer made a terrific point blank save from substitute Matthew Tymon when the striker was left unmarked inside the six yard box.

Spencer then had to make a terrific double save from the resulting corner, this time it was Callum Hassan who looked certain to score for the North Yorkshire side. Spencer saved Hassan’s effort and then picked himself up to tip Tom Marron’s follow up shot onto the bar. And as the frantic game of pinball continued, Whitby hit the bar again with a Mark Ropbinson header before Dean Stott eventually headed the ball to safety for the Reds.

Down at the other end, Roca was in menacing mood but the winger again found the arms of Campbell rather than the back of the net after cutting inside from the right wing. And on 69 minutes it was Roca who put Deegan through on goal but a covering slide tackle by Ibrahim Hassan sent the ball out for a corner. Roca took the corner and Deegan rose virtually unchallenged at the near post to head home the third.

It was all going United’s way and they could have added two more in the last 10 minutes. Cottrell, who had put in a trademark energetic display in midfield, latched onto a poor clearance by Campbell and raced through the centre of the Whitby defence. He skilfully took on the both centre-backs to go one-on-one with Campbell but as the keeper threw himself at the ball, Cottrell slid in to send an effort just wide of the left post.

Then in the 90th minute, Norton played a great through ball to 20-year-old striker Ryan McGreevy who was on as a substitute. It looked like McGreevy would shoot but instead he calmly held the ball up on the right hand-side of the penalty area and waited for support to arrive. The former Manchester City trainee then laid the ball back to Deegan who hit a low and hard fist time shot from the edge of the box which cannoned off the post.

In the dying seconds, Whitby were once again unfortunate not to get a goal their hard work deserved. Spencer didn’t get to a free-kick from the left wing by Robinson and was left stranded in his 18-yard-box. Callum Hassan headed goalwards but fortunately for the Reds, Stott was on hand to head the ball off the line.

Website man of the match: Ben Deegan. A sublime first goal, followed by a more trademark finish. Led United’s attack well and was unfortunate not to grab a hat-trick.
