FC United fall to last gasp defeat against promotion rivals Warrington Town

FC United lost 1-0 to fifth place Warrington Town at Broadhurst Park on Tuesday night with the decisive goal coming in the 94th minute.

The match was billed as a promotion six-pointer in the Pitching In Northern Premier Division, and it proved to be a feisty game with both sides testing each other but struggling to find that end product. The Reds will feel that they deserved at least a point from this display, but that’s football.

It was a tightly contested fixture as both sides looked to gain ground on their play-off rivals, but with neither side willing to give the opposite number an inch. FC United had more possession and arguably had the better periods of play, but were undone in the dying embers by a smart strike from Josh Amis.

Both goalkeepers came into their own with brilliant saves worthy of any level. Dan Lavercombe showed his versatility as he not only gathered at the feet of the attackers many times, but his acrobatic saves were something for the FC faithful to savour.

The Reds went in at the break with more than 60% of the ball, and you would have been forgiven for putting money on the Wire defence eventually breaking down to allow FC United in to take the lead, but this just didn’t come.

Midway through the second half a Warrington player put in a dangerous challenge on FC United’s Michael Donohue right by the dugouts, and a melee ensued.

Town were very lucky to have 11 men still on the field at this point as the captain Matthew Regan raised his arms to Regan Linney’s face. A war of words began between the two opposing dugouts, but the game continued.

FC would continue to test the Warrington defence and the closest they got to opening the scoring was a Joe Duckworth header from point blank range, but Dan Atherton managed to tip the ball over the bar.

The game went into stoppage time goalless and FC United had a free-kick in their own half, which they launched forward. Warrington cleared and mounted an attack of their own. The Reds defence was carved open by a cross-field ball, which was nodded back to Josh Amis on the edge of the area. Lavercombe’s goal was finally breached as the ball fizzed into the bottom corner for 1-0 and to send the points back to Cheshire.

A disappointing defeat for the Reds, who must now pick themselves up for Saturday’s trip to fourth place Scarborough Athletic.
