FC United beat Morpeth Town for first win of the season

Goals from Jonathan Smith, Jordan Simpson and an own goal by Ryan Donaldson saw FC United cruise past Morpeth Town 3-0 at Broadhurst Park on Tuesday night – the perfect response to Saturday's opening day defeat at Warrington Town.

United were hurting from Saturday's setback and determined to bounce back at the first attempt and they did just that. Smith got Neil Reynolds' side off to the perfect start with a goal inside six minutes. Simpson doubled the lead on 67 minutes before Ennis sealed victory with just under 10 minutes to go, in front of 1,522 supporters.

On two minutes, great link up play from Cedric Main played in Simpson who fired narrowly past the far post. Just four minutes later it was 1-0 as a corner from the right was headed back by centre-back Drew Baker for Johnathan Smith to flick home his first goal for FC United. The Red onslaught continued, Ali Waddecar seeing a chance cleared from the line and then two minutes later seeing his shot rattle the crossbar.

Just before the half hour mark, Morpeth created a chance from a free-kick but Liam Henderson saw his header tipped onto the post by Reds goalkeeper Dan Lavercombe. Set pieces seemed to be the best way for the visitors to create and a minute prior to the break another free-kick was played into the FC box, Chris Reid heading wide.

Morpeth started the second half strongly and it looked as if the Reds may come to rue the missed chances. Aaron Morris cleared a shot from Henderson off the line and, thankfully, FC got back into the game and the chances came again.

Matty Rain crossed for Main but he blasted his shot over when he probably should have done better, Charlie Ennis channelled his inner David Beckham when attempting a chip from halfway, but Daniel Lowson saved comfortably.

The lead was finally doubled on 67 minutes. A good move on the right involving captain Michael Potts and a dummy by Ennis saw a ball into Simpson on the edge of the box and he found the bottom corner.

A few minutes later, Main powered his way into the box and shot into the side netting. Despite looking like he was behind held back on a couple of occasions, the referee wasn’t interested.

The game was all but ended with nine left on the clock when an Ennis free-kick was headed into his own goal by Donaldson for 3-0.

A great performance from FC United with all contributing to a deserved victory. It's a win that can only set the players up well for tough assignments against Buxton and South Shields in the coming week.

Website man of the match: Jordan Simpson. An all round great performance showing good passing, great break-up and link play, topped off nicely with a goal.
