FC United lose at home again to Leamington
A 2-0 defeat to Leamington at Broadhurst Park on Saturday afternoon meant it was three consecutive home defeats to start the season for FC United, leaving just Nuneaton below them in the league table after six games played.
The Reds had not played for over a week and half since their morale boosting victory at Altrincham and looked slow coming out of the blocks as they aimed to bag their first home points of the season.
After just nine minutes the visitors had the lead when Connor Taylor cut through the FC defence on the left flank before Kieran Dunbar smashed the ball home from the edge of the box.
Neither team really got going in the first half with only half chances for both being the closest we came to a goal in a game which certainly won’t be remembered as a classic encounter.
The second half didn’t really get going either and the Reds struggled to develop anything substantial between midfield and attack and chances were once again at a premium.
With a quarter of the game left the Reds looked to push forward in order to make something happen in the final third, but a counter attack from Leamington saw Matt Stenson one-on-one with Billy Crellin and he showed great composure slotting the ball below the Reds’ goalkeeper to make it 2-0 and all but kill the game off as a contest.
FC United had a good period towards the end of the game with several shots towards goal during a penalty box scramble and a strong handball shout was waved away, but in truth a consolation goal would have flattered us given the performance over the whole afternoon.
The defeat makes it three from three home games in the league this season. Having had such a strong home record last season it’s something that Tom Greaves and his staff will want to look at immediately. Next up for FC United is a bank holiday trip to Spennymoor Town.
Website man of the match: Scott Kay – gave the midfield some ‘bite’ and his presence is much welcomed in a midfield that has struggled this season so far.
