In the warm Autumn sunshine of Saturday morning the Development Squad took on AFC Emley and emerged 3-1 winners. FC United’s goals came from debutante David Kuba Kuba, Frank van Gils and Jay Walcott with Curtis Roberts replying for Emley.
Emley started brightly and provided a stiff test in the opening fifteen minutes. Two successive corners in the tenth minute were eventually dealt with. They should have gone ahead on fifteen. With the home defence looking to catch runners offside the lack of a flag meant Emley were clear on the home goal but shot wide. That led to a heated exchange with the bench which saw Kuba Kuba replace Charlie Doyle and Jason Fowles move to right back.
That move meant the reds were able to take control of the game and create their own chances. Jon Poizer was just wide with a shot on 20 minutes before hitting the post with a header as Frank van Gils returned a corner that had escaped everyone. Jay Walcott was just too high with a shot from 30 yards and other chances came and went.
After ten minutes of pressure Emley seemed to have ridden out the storm and were again threatening themselves, a Michael Boateng shot on 35 minutes tested Taylor. That however, was the cue for FC to take the lead. Kuba Kuba threaded a ball to Poizer whilst his shot was saved the ball sprang back out to the debutante. What can only be described as an elaborate step over created enough confusion in the Emley defence to allow him to fire home from 25 yards.
In the second half, Emley again started well and had the ball in the FC net on 55 minutes but it was disallowed for a push. That was merely a temporary escape as the equaliser came just four minutes later, as Curtis Roberts was able to escape the home defence to score. From then on Emley chased everything but all the chances fell to the home side. They were unlucky not to restore the lead straight away, A Scott Cheetham cross found its way, via Josh Smethurst to Walcott, his shot turned for a corner by Joe Stead.
FC did restore their lead soon afterwards as Fowles and Joe Power set up van Gils, his shot finding the net with the help of a deflection from Callum McLoughlin. The home side then dominated the game and created most of the chances, without actually testing Stead.
Whilst Emley did have one last chance to equalise, in the dying minutes when a quality cross from Roberts failed to find the finish it deserved; it was the home side that secured the points in injuiry time, Walcott finding space behind the visitors defence calmly slotting home.
The reds closed the gap at the top of the table to one point as leaders Brighouse surrendered their 100% record at home to Nelson in a 1-1 draw. Next up for the reds is the visit of Eccleshill to the Nicholls Academy on Saturday 26t. An 11am kick off providing the perfect opportunity to watch the lads before catching the Metro to Bury.
