FC United of Manchester Academy ’B’ team edged through to the semi-finals of the Greater Manchester Schools FA Under 18s County Cup following this narrowest of victories against Bolton Sixth Form College on the Broadhurst Park 3G on Wednesday afternoon.

The Young Reds had taken the initial lead on 18 minutes when ZAID BAROUDI glanced home from a Mason Beard free kick.

The lead didn’t last long and the visitors drew level on 25 minutes when AYOUB ALOUCHI bundled the ball into the net from close range.

On 33 minutes, FC United regained the lead in impressive style when CALEB ADENUGA rifled an effort home from outside the area.

Five minutes later, it was 3-1 when Caleb Adenuga looped a cross over from the right and ZAID BAROUDI headed home from just inside the six yard box.

Bolton Sixth Form College were by no means out of it, and on 55 minutes, they pulled one back when BRANDON TEMPLE raced away before netting easily.

Three minutes later, it was 3-3 when CLINTON MATURUTSE got on to the end of another quick breakaway.

But the visitors were on level terms for less than two minutes, before MASON BEARD went on a mazy run and scored to put the FC United of Manchester Academy ’B’ team in front again on the hour mark.

Back came the visitors again, and on 78 minutes, BRANDON TEMPLE made it 4-4 with a long range effort.

NIALL WEBB’s calmly taken penalty on 83 minutes after Caleb Adenuga had been tripped on the edge of the box looked to have won it for the Young Reds, but the indefatigable Bolton team amazingly snatched an equaliser in the fourth minute of time added on through OWEN THOMAS to send the tie into extra time.

In the fourth minute of extra-time, the visitors went in front for the first time in the match, when CLINTON MATURUTSE scored direct from a corner kick, but there was still time for FC United to take the tie to a penalty shoot-out when LUCAS MARTINS grabbed a heavily deflected equaliser from outside the penalty area with three minutes remaining to make the final score 6-6 after extra-time.

And so to penalties. Bolton missed two of their first three spot kicks, and FC United’s Niall Webb, Kane Stockley, Ellis O’Reilly and Zaid Baroudi made no mistake with theirs to send the Young Reds through 4-3 on penalties.

FC United of Manchester Academy ’B’ team will now face Aquinas ’B’ team in the semi-finals at Broadhurst Park on a date to be agreed, most likely in mid March.
