Match Report
Women power past Blackpool into Cup Quarter Finals

For the second time this season United’s Women have seen off opposition from the top end of the league above, first beating Bolton at Broadhurst back in September in the FA Cup, and on Sunday, in arguably the most complete team performance of the campaign so far, they took on Blackpool Girls & Ladies FC on the Fylde coast beating their hosts 4-1 to progress to the quarter finals of this season’s Argyle Cup.

FC held a slender one goal advantage at the break, courtesy of Kirsty Chambers’ 18th minute strike, powering a low drive across the keeper into the bottom corner. Beth Tattersall, released by Olivia Greenhalgh surged into the area and half volleyed over Hannah Speake and into the top corner to double the lead on 53 minutes.

Debutant striker, Jess Battle earned a spot kick and scored on the rebound following her saved penalty, to put the reds three up late in the game and becoming the 16th player to score on her debut for the reds.

A minute later, Laura Oakley snatched one back for the Tangerines denying Olivia Gannon a deserved clean sheet before Chambers rounded off the afternoon with a superb free kick deep into stoppage time.

This late strike also marked the 500th competitive goal FC’s Women have scored in 98 matches spanning just 4 1/2 seasons with Kirsty Chambers also scoring goal 300 & 400.

Next week the Women are away to Stockport County Blues and are next at Broadhurst Park on 5th February when we welcome Egerton Ladies. We also hope the Salzburg friendly and weekend of fun will spill over into a good crowd for this game and with attendances growing, your support of our Women’s Team is always very much appreciated. Thank You.

FC Player of the game: Fran Davies – in a game where every player including subs more than played their part, Fran’s reading of the game and steady influence at the back; thwarting and frustrating the Blackpool forwards all match, provided a key platform for all the good work undertaken around her by the rest of the team. A real standout team performance with credit all round.
