FC United claim first away win of the season at Basford United

FC United secured their first away win of the season with a 1-0 victory at Basford United on Tuesday night courtesy of a second half screamer from captain Michael Potts.

The Reds tore up the form book at Greenwich Avenue by inflicting the hosts' first home defeat of the season - and it could have been by a bigger margin.

The match, played in difficult windy conditions lacked any major chances in the first half, but United did do their best to get their foot on the ball and play football. However, the best they could manage in the opening 45 minutes was when Cedric Main saw his tame effort from distance easily dealt with by goalkeeper Adam Collin.

Down at the other end, Aaron Morris had to be alert to block Rev James on the edge of the area after he'd been played through by a defence-splitting pass from Kane Richards. Dan Lavercombe was enjoying a quiet night in goal for FC United, but he did have to make one decent save when Ryan Wilson tried a drive from distance. But, other than that, the FC shot-stopper was rarely troubled.

Six minutes into the second half, Potts caught everyone by surprise by arrowing a ball into the net from 25 yards giving Collin no chance. Michael Donohue had brought the ball forward down the right, but his shot was blocked by a defender. However, the rebound fell to Potts, who took a touch before delicately driving the ball beyond Collin's reach for 1-0. It was a classy goal from a classy player.

Moments later, Potts should have bagged his second and doubled the lead, but he ballooned the ball over the bar from 10 yards out after leftback Adam Dodd had laid it on a plate for him with a good cross from the wing into the penalty area.

United weren't able to find another goal, but thankfully they were rarely threatened by the Nottinghamshire side. Lavercombe just had to make one more save all evening. It was a no thrills, but priceless three points performance from the Reds, and one they will be very pleased with. The win takes Neil Reynolds' team up to 10th. They now entertain Nantwich Town at Broadhurst Park on Saturday.
