FC United hold highflying Bamber Bridge in Irongate stalemate

FC United returned from Irongate with a hard-fought point after a 0-0 draw against second placed Bamber Bridge at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium.

The Reds have never scored at Bamber Bridge, despite four visits in 15 years, but they will be happy with the draw, taking fourth points from Brig this season, and extending our current unbeaten run to six games.

With FC United manager Neil Reynolds returning to his old club, there was always going to be spice but in truth the game was a bit of a damp squib that never really threatened to catch fire. Neither team registered a shot on target in the first half, such was the tightness of the game.

It took 12 minutes for the first sight on goal when a looped header from Aaron Morris was easily cleared. Five minutes later, a cross from the left found Nathan Pond but his header flew over the bar.

Former FC United winger Finlay Sinclair-Smith powered a shot goalwards just after the half hour, but Morris threw himself in front of the ball and it flew out for a corner.

Brig started the second half the stronger, but the FC defence was holding very firm and chances were limited. Dan Martin fired across the face of goal and Pond was played in via a ball over the top, but he blasted over.

Just after the hour, the ball bounced around the home defence, Regan Linney getting a shot off, but it was straight at Mateusz Hewelt, the first save for either keeper. Morris again was forced to put his body on the line when he blocked a shot from Brig’s new signing Rhys Turner.

With 10 minutes to go, the home side broke down the left with FC attacking, but Turner fired wide. Linney again forced a save from Hewelt as the game moved to its conclusion but in all honesty 0-0 seemed to be a fair result.

Website man of the match: Aarom Morris. In a strong FC United defensive performance, Morris again stood out and was vital in keeping the clean sheet.
