Match Report
The Development Squad traveled to Atherton Laburnum Rovers to give them the experience of playing against a North West Counties side on what was a muddy and uneven surface. FC started with a strong line-up where as Atherton were using it as a chance to give younger squad members a game and also to give match practice to players coming back after injuries. Noticeable in the home line up were ex FC Youth players James Brooks and, in a trial run out, Andrew Farrimond.

FC United started brightly, dominating the first half, but without being able to convert any of their chances. Indeed it wasn’t until the 25th minute that Atherton had a sight of goal. The half did end with a goal for both sides as attacking moves cut through the centre of the defences, Robbie Robertson scoring for FC United.

The second half started with the move of the match, Frank van Gils passed through to Matthew Boland on the right wing, his cross was met with a first time effort from Tunde Owolabi to restore the lead.

Other chances came and went as the half wore on and both sides made changes. Atherton were mostly bringing on their bigger, more experienced players. Their second equaliser came from a corner, with an unopposed near post header.

The home side made that extra size and strength count in a short spell midway through the second half with three quick goals, first from another unopposed corner, second from a break which caught out the FC defence and finally from a penalty, awarded despite a lack of appeal, when striker and goalkeeper met to challenge for a ball played forward, the Atherton player was left sat on the ground and the ball had run over the goal line.

Eventually a disappointing result but a valuable lesson to take away and absorb.
