FC United lose in stoppage time at Atherton Collieries

FC United suffered their third defeat in a row as they threw away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 by succumbing to a stoppage time sickener at Atherton Collieries.

On a blowy, wet day neither team really took charge of the match, the home side forcing the first save of the game with Aaron Smith testing Dan Lavercombe, the keeper being equal to the shot. From that point, the Reds looked the more likely, Regan Linney testing Luke Hutchinson.

Just after the half hour, FC United took the lead with a great goal. Michael Donohue did well to find the lively Cain Hayes who motored into the box, laying the ball to Bradley Holmes, who took a touch and fired into the bottom corner. Just before halftime, Lavercombe did well to save from Marcus Cusani.

As seen so many times over the years, for some reason, FC United didn’t really come out for the second half as the home side took the initiative, albeit with little goalmouth action.

It took the Cols until the 68th minute to muster a meaningful chance and it was actually the equaliser. A good ball over the top found Ethan Kershaw who took his time and finished well into the same corner Holmes had bagged in the first half.

The game continued in a similar vein with chances at either end at a premium, Cusani firing wide on 74 minutes and Hayes shooting straight at Hutchinson after a mazy run down the right. It looked for all the world that a draw would have been the outcome, but not for the first time this season, FC United were undone by a late winner.

With 93 minutes on the clock, another ball over to the right caused FC problems, Cusani cutting in and crossing for Luca Defreitas-Hanson to just get enough on the ball to see it pass Lavercombe and bobble over the line to spark understandable elation from the home fans and dejection from the visitors.

Website man of the match: Aaron Morris. Certainly didn’t deserve to be on the losing side. Did all he could to keep the defence solid.
