Match Report
FC United reserves travelled to Kellamergh Park to take on AFC Fylde and came away with a deserved 4-2 win. Goals from Leo Magnone , Dean Hope and a Chris Hill brace were sufficient to take the points in a windblown evening.

In the first half FC United played into a fierce wind and were pressed back by the home side as clearances struggled to make any distance. Hard as they tried though Fylde didn’t take advantage, it was eight minutes before they managed their first shot. Indeed it was twenty five minutes before they got anything on target as a free kick headed on by a defender tested keeper Ben Jupp.

Meanwhile the reds were working their way into the game, a tenth minute corner dropped for Magnone who shot wide. They came close on twenty minutes when Hope played Magnone in down the right wing to cross for Hill, his effort somehow squirmed wide.

As the half progressed and it seemed that it would be good to get to half time goalless, they had other ideas. A Dean Hope free kick was tidily finished by Magnone on 30 minutes. It seemed as if that would do nicely for a testing first half but Fylde had other ideas. They were level five minutes later when Jack Williams crossed from near the left wing corner flag and Jake Gregory sneaked in at the far post.

Whilst another Hope free kick gave Hill a chance to restore the lead fairly quickly, the home side continued to press but without success and the sides left the pitch all square at half time.

Both sides were inevitably sent out for the second half with different game plans, Fylde were forced to use plan C before the half had truly started. With barely a minute gone Connor Martin’s run down the left wing was halted unfairly. If the resulting Hope free kick was intended as an early test of how Fylde would cope with the wind it couldn’t have worked better as home keeper Aiden Ward-Smith failed to keep hold of the ball which somehow squirmed over the line without assistance, Jacob Holt would claim credit the photographic evidence would prove inconclusive so the after match inquest gave credit to Hope.

A third goal followed ten minutes later when a ball in to the box from the right found Chris Hill with time to pick his spot. From there FC might have looked to put the game out of reach but Fylde managed to pull one back soon afterwards. A corner from the right dropped to the edge of the box and two or three Fylde players had time to fire home and one did. It did turn out to be Fylde’s last real chance.

The result was put beyond doubt on 75 minutes. Given the conditions, a ball played down the left wing should have allowed Ryan Vaughan time to let it run out or deal with it comfortably. Robson Buckley had other ideas and his selfless chase caused the Fylde man to put the ball out for a throw-in. From that, Scott Cheetham and Chris Hill were able to reprise the Fylde first half goal, the former crossing for the latter.
