Board Member John Davies provides a round up of developments at the club and the various volunteer opportunities that exist - There will be a meeting of all volunteers both current and new at Broadhurst Park on Wednesday 19th July at 6:30pm.

The new season is not far away and there have been discussions to ensure we are ready to go and in a fit state to put on games at Broadhurst Park.

Over the summer various developments have taken place so we now have a more permanent Merchandise shop and we will soon be laundering our own kit. We don’t yet have enough money to launder but are happy to keep things legal!

The Volunteer match day organisation is expected to be operated primarily from the cabin. The amount of office space has been reduced and we can better utilise the space we have by moving the signing in and kitting out of our volunteers to the cabin (which will have to be open early to be effective).

We have often thought of the volunteer hours that go into a match day operation. The money the club can save by using the efforts of our volunteers is not inconsiderable. But it is not just the money that matters. By volunteering you can contribute to the financial welfare of the club and hopefully have an enjoyable time mixing with other volunteers and finding out more about the way the club ticks. The replies to questionnaires indicated how much people felt it was worthwhile to volunteer and it is always appreciated when that effort is acknowledged by the match going fan.

Shortly we hope to appoint our new safety officer to replace Brian Slater (very many thanks, Brian) and we will be looking to ensure that we have a full matchday team of stewards who can ensure that we are all safe and the Police and Safety Advisory Group can continue to rely on us operating the stadium on a matchday. Keeping the police out of the stadium will save us a tidy sum. Volunteer stewards will be sought and the club can come to an agreement to train stewards and help them obtain qualifications which will open up further job opportunities .

Match day volunteers deal with Programme sales, operate the turnstiles, sell PFTG tickets ensure a food and beverage system works, guides the young ball boys and girls, marshall the traffic and car parks, sell merchandise and much, much more.

But it is not just match days. On a daily basis there are people doing works at the ground, The “diggers??? help keep the whole estate neat and tidy, some help in the office with the various jobs that need looking after.

The whole area of communication covers a multitude of activities. Producing a programme, The Pink, the radio and TV broadcasts, photography, match reporting, board reporting, the website, emails and social media; match promotion, leaflets, flyers and brochures etc. It really is amazing how many people get together to coordinate this whole area and how effective their work is, but we do need more people to get involved to maintain the high standards that we set ourselves.

As many of you know I could go on but suffice it to say that volunteering can be enjoyable and all members are invited and encouraged to think of ways they can help your club and to get involved.

There will be a meeting of all volunteers both current and new at Broadhurst Park on Wednesday 19th July at 6.30pm. No date or time are convenient to everyone but if you can be there to check on changes to our operations and to see what the various jobs entail, then I look forward to meeting you there.

If you can’t attend the meeting but wish to offer your services then contact me and indicate your area of interest. Leave contact details and I will get in touch and discuss how we can best use your talents.

Please contact John Davies, Board member with responsibility for volunteer work at johndavies@fc-utd.co.uk
