FC's Women defeat old Chorltonians in mid week clash

FC’s Women defeat old Chorltonians in mid week clashIn our first encounter since 2015 with former Greater Manchester Women’s Football League opponents, Chorltonians Ladies, FC United’s Women triumphed 4-2 in a very tough mid week away encounter.
United were 3-0 up at half time and seemingly coasting to victory courtesy of Abbie Carrington, Chloe Wild and an Olivia Greenhalgh penalty. Chorltonians had pegged the reds back to 3-2 within 20 minutes of the second half with goals from Shauna Edmondson and Aisha Yallop and United nerves were finally settled in stoppage time following a stunning second goal for Chloe Wild.
United started the game well; Morgan McWhirter setting Wild away down the right for the winger to deliver a superb cross for Shellby Wolstencroft to side foot volley over the bar in the first minute.
A snap shot from Wolstencroft was well held by Natalie Callaghan who launched the ball up field which was cleared at the expense of a corner; swept in dangerously by Ellie Caddick as Aisha Yallop rose highest to power a header off the bar sparking an episode of desperate pin ball in the six yard box before a clearance was finally made; the aftermath leaving Amy Gillingham requiring treatment.
United’s first corner ultimately produced the game’s first goal. Carrington fired the set piece low and hard to the near post and the ball was cleared back to the Number 3 who progressed into the area and from a tight angle squeezed a shot between the near post and keeper to open the scoring on 13 minutes.
Chorltonians responded well and good work down the left by the skilful Jamila Hodges saw her lay the ball back to the edge of United’s area for Ellie Caddick’s drive to be well blocked and cleared by Captain Fran Davies.
United played the ball through midfield and up to the edge of Chorltonians box with a half clearance falling to Wild who struck a curling shot first time from 30 yards over a surprised Callaghan to double the red’s lead on 23 minutes.
Another good response from the home side as Debbie Price broke down the right and centred a deep cross for Yallop who was denied by a brave dive at her feet to smother the ball by Gillingham. With the half drawing to a close, Wolstencroft tricked her way into the area and was finally tripped when threatening the goal as the referee pointed to the spot. Up stepped Greenhalgh to tuck the ball away confidently to give United a 3-0 half team lead.
Hodges created two half chances for the home side following the restart and as United failed to take several opportunities to clear their lines Adora Yau was adjudged to have handled the ball as she attempted to chest the ball clear just inside the area. Edmondson despatched her penalty emphatically and Chorltonians sensed a way back.
United introduced Jade Boulton from the bench marking her FC United debut and was straight into the action but it was Chorltonians who seized the initiative once again. A long throw into the United area deceived Davies and Yallop anticipated well, swivelling and firing a low half volley across Gillingham and in at the far post to reduce the deficit to just one goal with 25 minutes left to play.
The red’s strengthened defensively switching to a back four and bringing on Chelsea Patient. This move certainly settled the United side and allowed a measure of the first half composure to return. The away side looked for the crucial opening to put the game beyond reach for Chorltonians and Jess Battle forced Callaghan into an excellent save with 5 minutes of normal time remaining.
As the encounter ticked into stoppage time and with the earlier sunshine long vanished the light was fading fast – nevertheless United were ending the game the stronger typified by the tireless Wild who latched onto a bobbling pass from Greenhalgh just outside the right edge of Chorltonians area. Her first time stunning half volley once more surprised Callaghan as at dipped over the keeper and into the top corner to spark relieved celebrations from the FC contingent on and off the pitch.
Deeper still into added time Boulton and Wild forced Callaghan into two good saves before referee Slinger brought the game to a close.
A difficult encounter well negotiated by FC’s Women with the reverse fixture taking place at Broadhurst Park on Easter Sunday. Bootle remain 3 points clear after a 2-0 win at 3rd place Warrington who travel to Liverpool for their reverse on Sunday also. With games running out why not put the last few fixtures, including two cup finals, in your diary and come and get behind the team. It could make all the difference. Many thanks.
