FC Winterthur (Switzerland) v FC United of Manchester, Sat 24 May 2014

FC United of Manchester are scheduled to play another exciting post-season European friendly game, this time travelling to a new country. We will be guests of FC Winterthur from the Canton of Zurich in Switzerland. The match will be on Saturday 24 May 2014, k.o. 5.30pm local time.

FC Winterthur are currently playing in the 2nd tier of Swiss football and are a long established club, with a history that includes an old link to the UK. They were the beaten finalists when the Great Britain representatives, West Auckland, won what is often referred to as the first World Cup in 1909.

FC Winterthur decided to invite FC United to play this friendly after hearing from contacts at Babelsberg about how much they had enjoyed our game last close season. The anti-discrimination stance of their supporters means that FC Winterthur are commonly known as the “St Pauli of Switzerland???. Their most committed fans stand in an area known as the Bierkurve. It sounds like it’s going to be another classic Euro away trip.

Officials from FC Winterthur have been working hard on associated plans for the game, particularly because we are aware Switzerland is a slightly more expensive country to visit. As an example, they are arranging a post-match party at which the Champions League final will be shown and drinks will be available at cheaper than normal prices.

Please note that a budget hotel and a cheaper hostel have both been reserved for our visit. This gives us far more available rooms in Winterthur than the number of fans who are likely to travel and these will be the cheapest options you can find – in fact if you try to find these options now, you can’t, because they’re reserved for us. Details are not finalised for booking yet, but it is anticipated that rooms will shortly be available at discounted prices for our fans. They will remain discounted until a defined date, which will give plenty of time for booking to be made. A further announcement on this will be made as soon as possible.

Further details of the accommodation, party plans and other match information will be posted as it becomes available.

(To our friends in Winterthur - we understood the announcement was timed for 12 noon Central Europe Time, but notice it’s not on your site yet. Left it to well past 12 noon UK time in case of confusion, but have to post this now, because we’ve got a league game to plan. Hope all is OK and see you in May 2014)
