Match Report
A hat-trick by Tom Greaves and a penalty from captain Dean Stott helped FC United move up to sixth place in the Evo-Stik Premier Division on Tuesday night as the Reds won 4-1 at bottom club Droylsden.

United scored two goals in each half with Stott’s penalty coming on the stroke of half-time and they could have had more, rattling the woodwork a couple of times. The only disappointment of the match was not keeping a clean-sheet when Steven Moore grabbed a late consolation goal.

Going into the game, Karl Marginson’s team knew this would be a great opportunity to move up the league as the home side have struggled this season picking up just two points.

But from the off, the hosts looked to try and be solid at the back and frustrate the United attack. And in the early stages that’s exactly what they managed to do, frustrating the United attack and forcing them to half chance efforts from outside of the area.

However, with large chunks of possession it was more a matter of when rather than if United would score, and just after 16 minutes a ball fired across the goal from Astley Mulholland was tucked away by Greaves for his first of what would be a busy evening.

Not content with just a single goal lead, United pushed on looking to double the lead. The best opportunity came when Callum Byrne hit the crossbar just before the half hour mark.

The first half dominance was duly rewarded with a second goal just before half time as a late and clumsy challenge on Liam Brownhill gave United a penalty, which Stott stepped up and fired away to give United a 2-0 lead going into the break.

The second half began to a great atmosphere from the United faithful behind the goal which United attacked in the second half and this fired them up for wave after wave of attack in the second 45 minutes.

That attacking intent gave United an almost instant reward as the score was 3-0 just ten minutes into the second half. Matthew Wolfenden worked well on the left hand-side of the box, firing across goal before Greaves bundled the ball home to double his tally for the evening.

A string of half decent chances followed, with Wolfenden denied by the Droylsden ‘keeper being the pick of the bunch, but United knew the game was in the bag and took their foot off the gas a little despite dominating possession.

The fourth was a great goal by Greaves, who worked the ball onto his right root and drilled low, just out of reach of the Droylsden ‘keeper and into the bottom corner to complete his hat-trick on the evening.

There was a late consolation for the home team which was greeted with an ironic chant of “we’re going to lose 5-4!??? but United were the better team on the evening and did the job required of them to get back up to the business end of the league.

A run of three games against the three teams directly above now awaits FC United, in what could be a pivotal couple of weeks in our season before the festive period.

Man of the match: Tom Greaves – hard not to give it to Greaves who netted three times on the evening, including the third which was well placed into the bottom corner.
