Match Report
FC United edged to a 1-0 victory over Marine at Bower Fold on Saturday afternoon, courtesy of a second half header by Greg Daniels.

United came into the game having won just one of our previous six games, a run which saw the Reds quickly drop down the league and out of the FA Cup. But they came out against Marine and showed what the team and the club was made of, controlling the majority of the game against a team which has traditionally been rivals over the years.

That control of the match began from the very first whistle, as United had good amounts of possession and were always the team on the front foot from the off. Quite understandably given the recent run, the Reds were a little tentative in the final third and looking to keep it tight at the back, which meant moves often broke down in the final third.

Daniels got the first chance for United as he ran onto a ball just outside the box and saw his effort just deflected wide for a corner. But it was Tom Greaves (who it has to be said worked extremely hard up top on his own all afternoon) who had the best chance of the first half, as the ball found him just inside the Marine penalty area and although he managed to beat the visiting ‘keeper he saw his shot just over the bar.

Despite the even scoreline, there were plenty of positives to take from the opening half and the talk on the terraces was that this game was definitely there for the taking and that is exactly how United began the second half.

The confidence grew in the second half, most notably with Jerome Wright and Astley Mulholland linking up on the left flank to provide the most dangerous moves for United.

Indeed, it was down the left that the goal was made as Mulholland used his pace to get to the ball and fire a cross in from the by-line which was met by the head of Daniels and he found the net to give United a well-deserved lead.

Matthew Walwyn came off the bench and brought something different to the attack. The young winger will probably still be wondering how he didn’t double United´s lead as a ball across the goal from the right went across the six yard box and Walwyn just couldn’t get anything on it.

The Reds kept the pressure up and Daniels went close as he fired just over, but they just couldn’t get the goal which would have given them the cushion and comfort of a two goal lead. The narrow lead made for a tense and nervy finish.

Towards the end of the game United became a little nervous and allowed Marine back into the game but some valiant defending, led by the exemplary captain Dean Stott, meant that United kept the clean sheet and got the three points they deserved, and to be honest needed.

United move up to 11th in the league, but now just find themselves one point off a play-off position, which just shows how tight the league is and also shows how a good run of results can quickly see United right back in the mix of thing, starting at Nantwich on Tuesday evening.

Website man of the match: Astley Mulholland – a great team performance by every player, but Mulholland’s drive and determination meant he was a danger throughout and created the goal which gave United the win.
