Match Report
FC United progress to the fourth round of the Doodson Sport Trophy, where we will play Witton Albion, after winning 2-1 at Ashton United on Wednesday evening, with goals coming in each half from Mike Norton and Adam Jones.

The Reds almost took the lead inside the first minute when Cedric Krou broke free on the right and crossed. The ball found its way to captain Kyle Jacobs who saw his shot saved by Paul Phillips in the Ashton goal.

With seven minutes on the clock a robust challenge by Jake Cottrell saw the referee Mr Duncan in the game as he had to deal with a few handbags from both sides. When all had calmed down, he deemed Jacobs, Jones and Norton to be the only players worthy of yellow cards despite the involvement from opposing players also.

Ten minutes later, Jones saw a goalbound header well saved by Phillips as the Reds attempted to stamp some authority on the game. The visitors did take the lead on 23 minutes when a cross from Astley Mulholland eventually found its way to Norton who coolly turned his defender and slotted into the far corner.

Five minutes later, Tom Baker made a good run into the FC box to be challenged by a defender, Mr Duncan waving away the home players protests for a penalty. On the half hour mark, a cross from the right beat the FC defence but Matty Kosylo could only fire over the bar. Two minutes later Kosylo had another chance that was saved by United goalkeeper Jon Worsnop.

The chances continued to come at the opposite end, Tom Fisher and Cedric Krou shooting straight at Phillips for the visitors meaning the first half finished 1-0.

Within four minutes of the restart, the lead was doubled when a free-kick found Jones who headed the ball into the net. However, the lead was halved just a minute later when Cottrell sliced the ball towards his own goal. The ball beat Lewis Lacey who was stretching to clear and found Dennis Sherriff who calmly rolled the ball past Worsnop for the Robins to pull one back.

Sherriff had another chance just after the hour but blasted the ball over the goal. Sherriff also came close on 66 minutes when he broke through on the right, his shot was saved by Worsnop but the ball fell once again for the Ashton forward who crossed but he had no teammates up in support waiting to pounce.

United were beginning to hang on somewhat and with 15 minutes to go, FC had a lucky let off when a header was cleared off the line by Jones. Deep into injury time, Kosylo had another chance but saw his shot saved by Worsnop who ensured FC progressed into the next round.
