Match Report
The lads returned to action after a five week break against Altrincham at the Hale Sports Club at Clay Lane Timperley. A crowd of around 100 which included those who appeared to be watching from a hot tub on the balcony of the sports club, was kept entertained as they left with a 2-0 win after a stiff examination from the host club, whose form, particularly in the first half was fully in keeping with their third position in the league table.

The home side were unfortunate not to be ahead at half time as they took advantage of any ring rustiness the lads were suffering from and dominated possession, with probably half a dozen shots fired wide. Indeed as half time beckoned had two excellent chances, where tight offside decisions came to FC’s rescue. The first was when a player in an offside position took the ball from a player who had run through and looked certain to score. The second chance was put in the net and looked a very tight call from the FC bench.

This isn’t to say that FC didn’t create chances, around the half hour mark there were two good efforts. Firstly Jonathan Poizer bringing a save from Stephen Bullen in the Altrincham net at his near post. A better chance came a minute later when Kial Callacher, back from an even longer abscence, broke up an Altrincham attack and set off running forward. His pass to Yousif Yousif gave the striker a run on goal and a fierce drive brought an even better save from Bullen.

The second half was a different game as FC stepped up the pace, Mike Taylor shot wide with an early chance. Altrincham did have chances but these were never as clear cut, a couple of corners from deflected shots were as good as the back line allowed it to get.

The game was decided in a couple of high octane moments midway through the second half. In the 67th minute, Andy Lee and Josh Smethurst worked a short corner routine for Lee to cross to Mike Taylor on the edge of the box. His drive must have had the keeper unsighted as he never moved. Barely a minute later the lead was doubled, substitute Kane Hughes released Yousif for another run towards goal. He managed whether through the run or a parried shot, to bundle the ball past Bullen before slotting home.

That saw the end of the scoring and although neither side sat back and settled for the result, Lewis Adams and Matt Musialowski combined for the latter to shoot and Yousif provided a chance for Daniel Maynard; but, it was the home side that came closest to scoring with a free kick that just went over the bar in the 82nd minute.

The management choice for Player of the Match was Josh Broadbent for a fine performance marshalling the defence and some excellent distribution, but mostly for the clean sheet.
