Match Report
A late Greg Daniels goal secured a satisfying three points for FC United in a 3-2 win at Nantwitch Town on Saturday afternoon but the Reds did it the hard way after throwing away an early two goal lead.

Matthew Wolfenden put United a goal to the good inside the first three minutes and Adam Jones headed home a Carlos Roca corner to make it 2-0 on ten minutes.

The Reds were in control and that’s the way the score-line stayed until the second half when Nantwich drew level through Sean Cooke on 44 minutes and Simon Everall on 64.

In the closing stages, James Spencer had to make two great saves as the Reds appeared to be on the ropes. However, just when it looked like they might be happy with a draw, substitute Rhodri Giggs combined with Jerome Wright to play Daniels in to fire home the winner with ten minutes to go.

Having only ventured out for a few minutes on Boxing Day, Saturday’s fixture had been long anticipated after a distinct lack of football over the festive period; the trip to the Weaver Stadium seeing United’s first full game since 15thDecember.

Karl Marginson’s men started the game extremely brightly, raring to go and early pressure paid off as United went ahead after only three minutes of play. Wright in a central position threaded the ball through to Wolfenden in the six yard box and as the flag stayed down, the ball crossed the line, before defenders rushing back could prevent the opening goal.

Almost immediately, Kyle Jacobs made a good run down the right and received the ball to come inside, nearly linking up well with Daniels inside the area, who was playing upfront in the absence of the suspended Michael Norton.

United continued to press, this time through Lee Neville who found Daniels in a good position. Jon Brain in the Nantwich goal blocked Daniels’ effort, sending the ball behind. The resultant Roca corner met with the head of Jones who rose unchallenged to head home powerfully, giving United a strong two goal cushion.

The Reds were being given plenty of room to play and the Dabbers had barely seen the ball inside the first ten minutes with their opponents turning good possession and play into two very early goals.

FC continued the half well, and although sitting deeper as the game progressed, still had the most chances; one of the closest of which coming from Wright. Good work from Wolfenden saw the forward work the ball out wide to Roca who crossed to Wright. The left winger’s header across the keeper had Brain beaten but the ball rolled inches past the upright.

To begin the second half in the way in which they had the first would have been ideal for United. However, bookings for the two central midfielders, Dave Birch and Lewis Chalmers followed minutes later by a goal for the Dabbers meant that the Reds were no longer looking comfortable.

The home side profited from a stroke of good fortune, holding onto the ball on the edge of the area, for it to be played across to Shaun Cooke who saw James Spencer off his line and struck well to put his side back into contention.

Daniels then looked for a reply at the other end of the park, receiving a throw-in and cutting skilfully past defenders along the dead-ball line before laying off to Roca who unfortunately couldn’t get a shot away.

Nantwich pressure ensued, with ex-FC striker Kyle Wilson coming close to an equaliser before a shaky spell around the United area saw Jacobs defending on his own goal line. As the Reds tried to clear, a free-kick was conceded in a dangerous position. Goal-scorer Cooke stepped up just outside the area, however this time was off target.

Marginson straightaway called on the bench and Astley Mulholland on his return to the club replaced Roca and Cedric Krou came on in place of Wolfenden.

The Reds looked nervy at the back and frustratingly let in an equaliser from Simon Everall just minutes after the substitute had been introduced to the game. Two goals for the Dabbers almost became three not long after as Rod McDonald hit a long shot, forcing Spencer to stretch into a fantastic save.

United’s final change saw the line-up altered to 4-4-2 with Rhodri Giggs replacing Chalmers. FC were struggling to hold onto the ball, and Spencer again kept his team in the game with a further excellent save.

The Dabbers’ pressure seemed to spur United back into action and Giggs, upfront, squared the ball to Wright. The winger looked to have lost possession on the edge of the area, however Daniels was on hand to pick up the ball and shot with conviction under the keeper to put the Reds back in front with a deserved goal for the front man.

United saw out the final minutes to hold on to their first victory of 2013, having started and ended the game strongly, and managing to keep Nantwich at bay by the skin of their teeth for much of the second half in what was another entertaining encounter between the two sides who first met back in 2006.
