Match Report

FC United secured a valuable point away at league leaders North Ferriby United on Tuesday might with a 1-1 draw, thanks to a first half goal by Jerome Wright.

It was Ferriby who had the first chance of the game, after a slip by Dean Stott but the resultant shot was wide. On four minutes, a good move involving Wright and Mike Norton saw the FC United striker through on goal but goalkeeper Adam Nicklin did well to smother the ball at the feet of the hitman.

Just after the quarter hour mark, the Reds came close to opening the scoring when Matthew Wolfenden played in Norton who rifled the ball goalwards but Steve Gardner cleared off the line.

At the other end, James Spencer had to show sharp reflexes when he parried a shot from outside the box by Liam King. Nicklin had to be sharp a few minutes later when he tipped a Wolfenden shot wide. A minute later and Spencer was in action again, tipping a King header over the bar.

On 38 minutes, FC United took the lead when a breakaway from their own box led to Lee Neville crossing the ball into the box. It found its way to Wright who calmly side footed the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Disappointingly for the Reds, their lead lasted just four minutes as a cross from left found a Ferriby head in the six yard box. The header was saved by Spencer but Russell Fry was quickest to the rebound and tapped the ball home.

The second half didn’t have as much goalmouth action as the first. The Villagers dominated possession as FC had done in the first half but neither side could find the priceless winning goal.

The Reds did have some chances, Norton firing over, Wright running at the defence and shooting at Nicklin and Jake Cottrell also seeing a shot saved well by the home custodian.

The game against Hereford on Saturday seemed to be telling on the FC United players as they started to look more and more tired with Ferriby dominating the game but the Red defence held out well.

The home side came closest to winning the game deep into injury time when a dubiously awarded free-kick from the right hand touchline was played into the far post. Mark Grey was waiting for the ball and with the goal at his mercy miskicked and the chance went begging.

Overall a draw was a fair result, FC United dominated the first half, North Ferriby the second, so both sides can be happy with a draw.
