|Nantwich Town ||1 - 2||FC United of Manchester|
Match ReportThe FC Youth Team opened their season with a trip to Nantwich Town and travelled back up the M6 from Nantwich with a 2-1 win with goals from Andy Lee and Blaine Biggs. Thoughts of a repeat of last season’s comprehensive double win were quickly cast aside as it was the home side that leapt out of the starting blocks. They were unlucky not to take a 1st minute lead, hitting the post during a swift break.
It was a much needed wake up call for the reds as they went on to control much of the game; Yousif Yousif was unlucky not to convert an Andy Lee cross two minutes later, Andy himself and Jonathan Poizer also having good shots saved in the first fifteen minutes. The first half did settle down after that and there weren’t many chances in the first half, the best football came from goalkeeper Joe Hankinson and his back four. The half did draw to a close with the best chance as Mike Taylor hit the bar with a long range free kick with Yousif heading the rebound over.
FC United stepped up a gear in the second half and perhaps should have had more than the two goals they did score; many attacks halted by borderline offside calls. Taylor and Yousif combined after 56 minutes with the latter trying to lob the keeper but the ball just cleared the cross bar. The deadlock was broken shortly afterwards, Daniel Maynard, who gave the Nantwich left back a torrid afternoon provided a run and cross that caused problems for the home defence. A clearance by the goalkeeper was drilled in off the bar by Andy Lee. Taylor hit the bar again two minutes later
The second fifteen minutes of the half were marked only by the management making substitutions but burst into life again soon after. It was 2-0 on 76 minutes as Blaine Biggs scored with a lobbed shot and Lewis Lacy hit the framework on 80 minutes. The reds didn’t score again although the fancy footwork of Maynard, Biggs and Lacy turned the home defence inside out, Lacy putting down an early marker for miss of the season as he managed to turn a Biggs cross back across goal and against the keeper rather than in at a wide open near post.
FC played the last ten minutes as defender George Adams received treatment to a cut above his left eye and was not risked again with a view to Wednesday’s game against Abbey Hey. Nantwich did score late in the game; a hopeful ball was looking to drop for Hankinson, but with players rushing towards at pace him he chose to punch from the edge of the area. Unfortunately it dropped to a Nantwich player who returned it with interest.
Biggs was unlucky not to re-establish a two goal lead deep into injury time with a curling shot that looked bound for the top corner until being turned for a corner by the outstretched arm of the home keeper.
