Match Report
Morecambe vs FC United of Manchester Part One saw the visitors come back down the M6 with a place in the next round of the NWYA Open Cup after three first half goals. An early strike by Matthew Boland and a brace from Theo Kidd were enough to see off a second half fight back by Morecambe, whose 50th minute strike turned out to be no more than a consolation.

As the game kicked off, the heavens decided to open. This could perhaps explain why it took the lads ten minutes to get on the score sheet. A couple of promising early diagonal balls to Alex Stones asked questions of the home defence but produced nothing more than a corner. The first goal came when Connor Naughton slipped a pass between the Morecambe central defenders to Give Theo Kidd a run on goal; rather than shoot he fed Matthew Boland who scored at the second attempt after a save by Sam Johnson in the home goal.

It was 2-0 five minutes later when an equally delightful through ball from Thomas Minnock put Theo clear again. This time he was able to shoot, lifting the ball over the advancing keeper. Morecambe then showed signs that they wanted to make a game of it as Lewis Finney shot wide as he took advantage of a defensive mix-up. That was short lived as the next action was a solo effort from James Brooks when he intercepted the ball deep in his own half and ran into space, then kept on running past three home tackles before testing Johnson with a strong drive.

Theo made it 3-0 on the half hour when Matthew Boland set him free, his shot went through the keepers legs. From then on Morecambe found an answer to FC attacking and started to create chances for themselves. Fortunately their shooting was wayward, otherwise they could have reduced the deficit or even been level by half time.

FC played against a strong wind in the second half and there was a noticeable reduction in the length of clearance kicks by Jonathan Beisty who made an otherwise excellent, possibly man of the match performance as a late replacement in goal. He was beaten early in the half; having blocked a first shot was unable to react in time to keep out the follow up, otherwise he was able to deal with everything that was fired at him.

The lads did make strenuous efforts to regain the fluency that had seen them open a three goal cushion without success. Theo and Matthew had chances but failed to test the home keeper. The best chance came in the last five minutes when Matthew fired a free kick across the face of goal only for it to evade everyone and go out for a goal kick.

The game finished 3-1 and everyone returns next week for part two when three league points are at stake.
FC United of Manchester: Jonathan Beisty, Alex Stones (Kial Callacher 83 mins), Obrian Richards, Kyle Cunningham, James Brooks. Connor Naughton, Maximilian Thomas, Thomas Minnock (Matthew Hassall 21 mins), Theo Kidd, Matthew Boland, Sam Howell (Jonathan Poizer 83 mins).

Goals: Matthew Boland, Theo Kidd (2).
