Match Report
FC United beat Woodley Sports 4-1 in their FA Cup with Budweiser first qualifying round replay at Glossop North End on Tuesday night.

A first half penalty from Carlos Roca broke the deadlock before goals from Ben Deegan, Adam Jones and Michael Norton sent the Reds through to face Lancaster City at Gigg Lane on Saturday 1st October.

FC United started the game like a team in a hurry with a shot from Deegan straight at the keeper on three minutes. On 10 minutes, Lee Neville almost opened the scoring with a daisy-cutter that was just wide of the goal.

At the other end, Gary Gee, who scored the last gasp equalising goal on Saturday at Gigg Lane in the original fixture, had a shot that flew over the bar and into the fast food restaurant car park behind the goal.

Daniel Grimshaw was the latest to come close to scoring for FC United with a shot and turn well saved by Liam Higginbotham in the home goal. Roca was having a dangerous night; a superb cross from the right just eluded the head of Norton in the middle.

It looked just a matter of time before the deadlock was broken and that happened on 25 minutes when Norton was sent clear in the box only to be tripped by Harry Bockarie. The official had no hesitation pointing to the spot and booked the defender. Roca stepped up to send Higginbotham the wrong way and put FC a goal up.

The lead should have been doubled just after the half hour mark when a Grimshaw scuffed shot found its way to Norton who again found Higginbotham unbeatable and he saved the shot. A minute later, Woodley were almost back in the game when Jones and goalkeeper James Spencer both hesitated to allow Jordan Stepien in. However, the striker he could only find the chest of the Reds keeper with his chance.

Shortly before the break, Daniel Stott was inches away from scoring an own goal. The United defender sliced a cross from the left towards goal and Spencer had to produce a great save to tip the ball round the post.
It took less than five minutes of the second half for the lead to double when a superb Roca cross found Deegan at the far post and the big forward sent a header back across goal and into the corner of the net.

Deegan almost grabbed his second a couple of minutes later when his shot looped up off a defender but Higginbotham tipped the ball over. Higginbotham again produced a great save on 53 minutes when a Nicky Platt shot was deflected by his teammate Jones. The keeper went bending and twisting backwards to tip the ball over the bar. However, the keeper’s joy was short lived. The corner found its way to Richard Battersby who produced a great cross for Jones to head in goal number three.

On the hour, a poor back-pass let in Deegan for a run at goal, he managed to go round the keeper and put in a cross for Norton but he couldn’t make contact with the ball with the goal at his mercy.

Three minutes later, Woodley got a foothold back in the game with Gee firing home a superb 25 yard shot into the top corner giving Spencer no chance.

The match also saw a welcome return for Steve Torpey, who has missed the last two matches due to a hamstring strain. Torpey came off the bench to cause problems for the home defence and he almost scored on 65 minutes but again Higginbotham was equal to the shot.

United wrapped up their first victory in six matches and a place in the next round with less than 10 minutes to go. A Spencer kick was headed past his own keeper by Gary Furnival and Norton ran onto the loose ball to roll it into an empty net.

Overall this was a great FC performance with all players who took part playing well and deserving the win and a crack at Lancaster City in the next round.
