Match Report

FC United slumped to a poor 4-1 defeat to Kendal Town on a disappointing night at Gigg Lane which was only slightly brightened by a consolation goal for Jamie Mack.

The alarm bells started to ring straight from the kick off with a shot from Danny Wisdom within 20 seconds. The Reds struggled to get their passing and any sort of fluency going, although Phil Marsh had a penalty claim turned down on 20 minutes when he was brought down chasing a long ball through, but the referee, probably correctly turned down the appeal.

Sadly, the main action was at the other end of the pitch with United goalkeeper Sam Ashton being quick to punch the ball from the head of former FC midfielder Gary Stopforth and full-back Walmsley having a shot saved.

Kendal finally broke the deadlock on 27 minutes with a through ball that Peter Wright latched onto, rounded Ashton and fired into the goal. It got worse for the Reds just two minutes later when Alex Taylor chased a through ball and collided with Ashton, the ref pointing to the spot. Walmsley despatched the penalty, sending the United keeper the wrong way.

In first half stoppage-time, FC had a chance to pull a goal back, Chris Ovington’s run ending with a shot wide but in truth Kendal deserved their half-time lead as FC never got started.

The game was effectively ended inside the first couple of minutes of the second half when Wright broke free on the left and crossed in for Osman to head home. On 49 minutes, the game was over as Alex Taylor was played forward and calmly lobbed the ball over Ashton to put the away team 4-0 up. It could have got worse for the home side as Ashton then had to save from both Wisdom and Osman.

In the last quarter of the game, FC started to put in some passing moves and had a few chances, Jerome Wright having a shot blocked and Joe Yoffe failing to connect with a header from David Chadwick with the goal at his mercy.

The Reds pulled back a goal on 84 minutes with Jamie Mack converting an Ovington cross. There was still time for a bizarre ending to the game, when a long ball forward seemed to be handled outside the box by the Kendal keeper Nennes, his momentum seeming to take him over the white line.

The assistant flagged for the offence, which provoked a furious reaction from the Kendal players and it took a while and a chat to both captains to restore order. After the furore, the free-kick was saves by Nennes.

So, all-in-all a poor night on the pitch for FC United with the only real bright point a good performance from substitute Kyle Jacobs when he came on in the second half and of course it will boost Mack’s confidence to get on the score-sheet after his long absence through injury.
