Match Report
FC United won 3-1 in a tight contest against a VfB Marburg Select XI on Friday night with goals from 19-year-old striker Lee Ellis, James Holden and Rory Patterson.

The Reds took the lead midway through the first half through Ellis and Holden added a second just after the hour during a sunny evening in central Germany.

Marburg pulled one back minutes later and the side from the Landesliga Hessen-Mittem, the sixth tier of German football, could have equalised with ten minutes to go when they were awarded a penalty but youth team keeper Jake Edwards pulled off a fine save.

Patterson then added a third goal late on to make the score-line flatter United slightly but over all it was a well deserved victory. The Reds are next scheduled to be in action against Altrincham on Tuesday 22nd July, although earlier dates may be announced in due course. Keep your eye on this website for further details.

On Friday evening, 6 June 2008, FC United achieved a closely fought 3-1 victory with goals by Lee Ellis, James Holden and Rory Patterson in an international friendly game against a Marburg Select XI. I hope that sounds like a professional start to a match report, but don’t be fooled, because this write up is being cobbled together after someone exclaimed on Saturday evening "Oh no, I forgot to find a volunteer to do a report of last night’s game for the website". Hampered by a hangover I had been working on for 3 days, I heard myself saying "Leave it with me, I’ll have a go" forgetting that I actually saw very little of the game. What follows may or may not be what happened.

FC United were invited by the Mayor of Marburg to play against a team made up of players from two local clubs, VfB Marburg and BSF Richtsberg. The game was part of an anti-racism community day in conjunction with the Fight Against Racism in Europe (FARE). Before the game there was a march from the town centre to the ground, which was joined by a number of FC United fans. Many thanks to the supporters who got involved and particularly to one of our regular Gigg Lane flag volunteers, who arranged for FC’s anti-racism banner to be transported to Marburg for the march.

After the marchers were welcomed into the stadium the game kicked off at 6pm local time. It was an evenly matched contest, despite the fact that our team was largely made up of young players. The delay in finalising the details for this game meant many of the more senior first teamers couldn’t get time off from work or family commitments, but that left the way open for some of our talented Reserves and Youth players to step up. A gutted Karl Marginson was also unable to attend this game, because Marburg could only stage the match on this date and the gaffer had a long standing commitment. Tony Cullen deputised ably and masterminded a terrific victory with a threadbare squad after several late withdrawals from the travelling party. He tried to draft in one of the club’s original steering committee to swell the depleted subs bench, but during a full-blooded training session in the morning the ringer came off second best while trying to tackle Rory Patterson and in a Gazza-cup-final type incident managed only to injure himself.

Lee Ellis, who graduated from FC’s youth team to become a regular in our reserves last season, opened the scoring on 24 minutes with a well-taken goal and FC probably just shaded the first half to take a 1-0 lead into the break. After half time James Holden, our only outfield sub, came off the bench and in the 65th minute he increased the lead to make it 2-0 to FC. This should have made the game safe, but Marburg quickly got back into it with a goal by Eugen Simunov on 67 minutes. The FC United players, more used to playing in Mancunian temperatures, began to tire a little in the heat and were kept in the game by some excellent saves from youth team keeper Jake Edwards, who had replaced debutant Tony Tompos at half time. Jake then went one better by saving a penalty from Marburg’s Anton Jencik. We were later told that Jencik had never previously missed a penalty, so he was probably not best pleased to lose his 100% record to our 17-year-old keeper. FC held on to their lead and in the dying seconds Rory Patterson made it 3-1, with a goal scored so late that the referee blew for full time immediately.

We were made to feel extremely welcome in Marburg and it’s a great tribute to the work we’re doing at FC United when we get invited to play European clubs who share our fan-owned vision. Supporters might like to note that while we were in Marburg we began early negotiations for next year’s post season Euro away game in a completely different location. Now don’t get too excited, because we began planning the Marburg game early last season and it took many months to finalise, but we’re very hopeful, so you might like to start saving and buttering up her/him indoors.
