Match Report

FC United ran out comfortable 3-0 winners in Saturday’s international friendly against Austria Salzburg at Broadhurst Park.

Sam Sheridan gave the Reds a first half lead before Kieran Glynn and substitute George Thomson added two second half goals.

A crowd of 1,562 turned out to watch FC United host the fellow supporter owned team, who were also formed in 2005 after their fans rejected a hostile takeover by an infamous drinks manufacturer. Around 300 fans made the trip from Austria, creating a great atmosphere.

The first chance of the match came 10 minutes in after good work by Jerome Wright down the left flank saw him cross the ball to Jason Gilchrist who’s shot went over the bar. Gilchrist then turned provider squaring a pass to Sheridan only for him to shoot over the target.

The Reds were beginning to get on top, winning the midfield battles and probing down the flanks through Wright and Jake Williams. United took the lead five minutes before the break. Some excellent football from Glynn aw him beat two players to feed the ball to Nathan Lowe on the edge of Salzburg penalty box. Lowe then back heeled the ball to Sheridan who’s first time shot found the back of the net to send the FC United faithful into raptures.

The second half started much the same as the first had ended with FC controlling play and more good work by Glynn around the Salzburg penalty area came to nothing. Salzburg then broke downfield with substitute keeper Dave Carnell making a good one handed save with the rebound being blasted over.

Moments later and the Reds doubled their lead. A delightful through ball from Sheridan saw Glynn collect neatly before rounding the keeper and calmly slotting the ball home from a tight angle. Salzburg’s best moment of the match came when they hit the crossbar on the very next attack but FC United survived unscathed.

Just after the hour mark, there was a mass substitution with both sides throwing on all of their subs, using the match to give players some much needed game time.

FC United looked stronger still after the changes, enjoying the lion’s share of possession. Salzburg played some neat build up play throughout but often with no end product as Luke Ashworth’s return from suspension seemed to calm the home defence.

As the game moved into the final quarter, substitute Harry Winter latched onto a through ball from Williams. Winter beat the offside trap before stroking a pass to fellow Thomson. The FC United forward executed an exquisite chip over the oncoming Salzburg keeper to put FC 3-0 up.

The home side saw the game to its conclusion without further incident. The evening was a great advert for fan ownership with both sets of fans enjoying the occasion and singing throughout.

Website man of the match: Kieran Glynn - provided excitement and skill whenever he had the ball and scored a great goal. He just shaded Sam Sheridan who performed well and also bagged a well taken goal.
