Match Report

Centre-back Luke Ashworth bagged a hat-trick as FC United won 7 (seven) 1 at Ossett Town and gained a place in the FA Cup third qualifying round.

Sam Sheridan, George Thomson and Tom Greaves got the other goals before Chris Chantler completed the rout in West Yorkshire.

After a cagey start, FC United took the lead on 15 minutes. The ball was played into the box where it was met by Ashworth, who calmly steered the ball past Leigh Overton in the home goal.

Ossett did start to see quite a bit of the ball but it was FC who had the chances with Greaves heading a Thomson cross wide.

Just after the half hour mark, the host side drew level when FC United failed to deal with a corner from the right. The ball was crossed back into the box where Tyrone Gay rose to head the ball past David Carnell.

The score was level for just a matter of three minutes as Ossett themselves didn’t clear a corner, the ball dropping to Ashworth who curled a great shot into the far corner of the net to restore the FC advantage.

Ossett still pressed and Carnell had to be alert to tip a long range shot over but FC United were looking dangerous on the attack and it was soon 3-1. Scott Kay fed the ball to Sheridan, who took his time and placed a great shot into the far post.

A minute later, the score was increased again when a ball forward was cleared by Overton well out of his area. The ball fell to Thomson, who lobbed the backpedaling goalkeeper from around 30 yards for 4-1.

After all the action and five goals in the first half, the second had a lot to live up to. It wasn’t as action packed but FC did extend the lead on 56 minutes when a Thomson cross was met by the slightest of touches from Greaves and the ball rolled past Overton and into the goal, making it 5-1.

Two minutes later, the home goal led another charmed life when a free-kick wasn’t cleared. In the scramble the ball rebounded off the post and was also cleared off the line. But from the resultant corner Ashworth completed his hat-trick when he headed home FC United’s sixth goal via a post.

To their credit, Ossett did continue to contribute to the game but the FC United defence was holding firm and kept out any threats. With five minutes on the clock, Harry Winter went close but he saw his lob cleared off the line and over the bar for a corner.

Two minutes into injury time, the scoring was completed when Chantler opened his account for the season, finishing well from a headed knockdown to make it 7-1.

This was a professional performance from FC United. The potential banana skin of lower league opposition was avoided and there was a number of goals scored to grow confidence in the team.

Website man of the match: Luke Ashworth - A rare hat trick for the defender but he also defended well when called into action.
