Match Report

At Leeds Beckett University, FC United Reserves came away with a 7-4 win against RIASA South. With two red cards and some interesting refereeing decisions thrown in for good measure; dull would be the last word to describe this game.

RIASA raced out of the blocks, dominating the early play. They had the ball in the net on two minutes after a Sulaiman Sajjad save was turned in, but an offside call came to the rescue. Although Chris Hill hit the RIASA post shortly afterwards the home side took the lead on five minutes when Chase Ealy was allowed space in the box to head home a cross from the right.

Chances followed for both sides as FC United worked their way back in to the game. Tom Greaves and Elliot Simoes had good chances as did RIASA at the other end in the next fifteen minutes. The equaliser came in the 24th minute. Hill swept the ball out to Kisimba Kisimba on the left, his cross was touched by the RIASA keeper but not enough to prevent Greaves heading home behind him.

Soon after this FC took the lead in a passage of play that saw the first interesting refereeing decision. Greaves was cleared to run in on goal with defenders in his wake. Paul Elias advanced and was inside the “D” of the penalty area as the ball was pushed past him. He dived and got a hand to the ball. A free kick was given and in an explanation given at half time the referee claimed that the proximity of the chasing defenders meant that the action warranted only a yellow card for the keeper.

Robson Brown took the free kick which hit the wall and flew out for a corner. The kick from Will Shawcross reached Brown on the edge of the box. His header down was turned in Sheringham style by Jack O’Leary. Play then settled down to some extent although the competitive element of the game remained and that would have been it until half time apart from an own goal equaliser for the home side on 40 minutes.

The first twenty five minutes of the second half were a flurry of activity. With less than a minute played RIASA were back in the lead as a break caught FC still mentally in the dressing room. FC United could have been level five minutes later as Kamahl Fuller intercepted a clearance and exchanged passes with Shawcross before a tantalising cross just evaded a diving Greaves. The Yorkshire red did equalise a couple of later when played in by Simoes and from then on whilst FC United seemed to be in control of the game, RIASA did manage the occasional threat.

A duel between Brown and Ealy had been simmering throughout the game and surfaced in the next attack. A foul by the RIASA player was deemed worthy of a booking, but for some reason the card was given to Kmiec instead.

FC United took the lead again on 63 minutes when Hill and Kisimba combined to give Shawcross a run in on goal. His shot across the keeper nestled in at the far post

Goals five and six followed rapidly from the 70th minute, firstly, a Fuller throw to Shawcross was moved on to Kisimba. His lob in to the top corner was if anything even better than his effort in the corresponding fixture at Broadhurst Park. Simoes finished a swift break for 6-3 almost immediately.

RIASA made it 6-4 on 77 minutes with another counter attack. Sajjad seemed to have snuffed out the break but was punished for dropping the ball or possibly letting it go as his momentum carried him to the edge of his area in an attempt to avoid a repeat of the first half episode.

As the game drew to a close there was more debateable refereeing. Firstly, Brown was running across the RIASA penalty area and appeared to be pulled back by virtue of a hand on his shoulder. With no decision by the referee he caught the player and received a yellow card. Then before play had restarted Kisimba was shown a red card for a reason that completely bemused both benches. It was explained at the end of the game as abuse to the linesman, although post match banter suggests it was the only abuse the officials actually heard all game.

More bizarrely, worse was to follow. A long ball forward by FC was being chased by Nelson Onwusiri but was always going comfortably through to Elias. The FC man, unable to stop or turn away collided with the keeper and fell over. It was expected by all that play would re-start with a drop ball after treatment for Onwusiri, a harsh referee may even have considered giving the FC man a yellow card. What happened next surprised everybody as the referee awarded a penalty and showed Elias a second yellow card. Joe DiMartino came on to face the kick from Hill but his only action in the game was to retrieve the ball from the net.
