Match Report

FC’s Women go top of the league with one game to go

With league leaders Merseyrail Bootle not playing until Thursday this was United’s chance to go top of the league, if only for a few days at least, as the season reaches a thrilling climax.
Maintaining their stunning end of season form, FC’s Women scored 11 without reply in their last competitive home game of the season against Curzon Ashton. Hatricks for the increasingly impressive Chloe Wild and Jess Battle a brace each for Shellby Wolstencroft and Jade Parker and a Beth Tattersall strike completed the rout and set things up nicely for the County Cup Final at West Didsbury & Chorlton’s ground this coming Friday (7pm KO).
In front of a three figure crowd, basking in Broadhurst sunshine United attacked with purpose from the start and good interchange between the returning Kirsty Chambers and Olivia Greenhalgh released Wild inside the area who half volleyed wide of goal in the opening minute.

With Curzon pressing well, the red’s worked their way out of a tight situation in their own half driving the ball forward to the feet of Battle flicking the ball wide to Tattersall who floated a superb cross to the far post where Parker headed home the opener from close range on 5 minutes.

A minute later and Chambers stung the hands of Curzon Keeper, Alex Moon with a fierce drive, the keeper palming over the bar. Curzon earned two successive free kicks in United territory; the first drifting harmlessly wide with Amy Gillingham claiming the second set piece comfortably as it was delivered into the box.
Curzon were frustrating and containing United but crucially Wild began enjoying more time on the ball and on 24 minutes unleashed a sublime long range drive which sailed over Moon and into the top corner. The red’s visibly settled and a minute later Battle had rounded the keeper to make the score line 3-0 after incisive build up. Gillingham releasing Adora Yau who in turn found Chambers to play a fantastic ball behind the Curzon defence for Battle to do the rest.

Ten minutes later and the industrious Tattersall made it four after determined approach play saw her latch onto a return pass from Battle squeezing the ball beyond the advancing keeper and in off the post.
Wild scored arguably the goal of the game to round off the first half winning a 50/50 challenge in the left back position and emerging with the ball before outpacing all comers as she drove towards the Curzon goal slotting the ball past Moon with aplomb.
The second half saw the red’s build on their first half dominance and on 52 minutes Battle had her second , the side’s sixth of the afternoon and 100th league goal of the campaign, calmly lobbing the keeper. A minute later and Parker bagged her second of the game with Chambers shielding the ball well and working a pass into the feet of Parker who flicked the ball over her defender before half volleying across Moon and into bottom corner.
The eighth came just after the hour as Wild completed a well deserved hatrick, once more utilising her blistering pace to cut through the midfield on into the area and firing beyond the dive of Moon. Moon saved brilliantly from a fierce drive by Greenhalgh and from the corner Battle pounced on a pin ball episode inside the six yard area firing home to complete her hatrick.
Wolstencroft, on as a substitute took her personal tally for the club to 99 in 97 appearances with two strikes in the 89th and 90th minutes; the first curling superbly beyond Moon and in at the far post and the second a cheeky lob over the keeper similar to Battles finish earlier to round off a superb afternoon.
This Friday, 28th April, United travel to West Didsbury & Chorlton FC’s Recreation Ground to face City of Manchester Ladies in the Manchester FA County Cup Final in a 7pm KO before facing Warrington Wolverines away at 2pm next Sunday in their final league game of the season. Get yourselves to those football grounds and support the Women in their bid for silverware. Thank you.

Report by Rob Fullen
FC Player of the game: Chloe Wild – Although substituted with around 20 minutes to go, Chloe had already fired a stunning hatrick and virtually covered every square inch of the Broadhurst 3G, such was her appetite and competitive desire. A stunning performance by Chloe amongst many excellent ones from her team mates in the final home league game of the season.
