Match Report

FC’s Women back to winning ways with convincing victory at Ellesmere Port
Putting last week’s reverse in Bootle firmly behind them, FC’s Women put in a determined and comprehensively dominant performance to defeat Ellesmere Port 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Two goals late in the first half from Shellby Wolstencroft were added to either end of the second half by Jess McCarrick and an OG off the boot of the home side’s number 5.
In the bright sunshine on a churned and spongy pitch behind the Whitby Sports and Social Club, Ellesmere Port Town Ladies got the game underway but it was FC United who pressed from the off setting the tone for a game they want on to dominate completely.
Chelsea Patient clipped the ball down the right wing for Chloe Wild to outpace the full back crossing dangerously through the six yard box from where the home defence cleared their lines. On four minutes Patient herself burst from back to front being thwarted at the last by a defending tackle deep inside the home half.
The pressure continued with keeper Charlotte Perry making several superb saves; one in particular as she tipped a fierce drive from Wild against her cross bar. Jess Battle fired two chances over the bar, Amy Vyas headed just wide from a corner, Beth Tattersall fired just over from a tight angle and Wolstencroft had a couple of strikes blocked by determined defenders.
Just past the midpoint of the half the home side enjoyed a ten minute spell of pressure and possession themselves with the number 9 testing Amy Gillingham from range with the FC custodian catching well beneath her bar.
United regrouped and reasserted themselves and as the half neared a conclusion Wild slid a pass through to Wolstencroft who broke the challenge of the last defender and coolly slotted the ball beyond Perry into the bottom corner on 43 minutes. Wolstencroft doubled the lead in first half stoppage time, rising at the far post to head home a superb Wild cross after the winger had benefitted from a superb build up between Abbie Carrington and Jess McCarrick.
After the break, United once again started strongly and in arguably the move of the game McCarrick tricked her way past a double challenge inside the centre circle playing the ball to the feet of Wolstencroft on the edge of the area whilst continuing her burst into the box. Wolstencroft shielded well facing away from goal and back heeled the ball into the path of McCarrick who stabbed home from 8 yards on 50 minutes.
Despite constant United possession and pressure, Ellesmere Port defended resolutely and Perry remained a frustrating presence in between the posts as far as the red’s were concerned. As the game ticked into stoppage time Wild punted a powerful and hopeful ball forward. Perry left her line in a bid to collect routinely but her number 5 stretched out a leg on the edge of the area and the ball deflected cruelly past a stranded keeper giving united a much deserved 4-0 victory.
The Women return to Broadhurst Park next Sunday as they welcome Stockport County Blues for the next instalment in the title race. If you can make the game and get behind the team it will, as always be much appreciated; many thanks.
Report by Rob Fullen
FC Player of the game: Chloe Wild – so many good performances throughout the team from defence through Midfield and onto the strikers and Chloe was a reliable outlet all game putting in several quality crosses on a very difficult playing surface; claiming three assists and also forcing the home keeper into two stunning saves.
