Match Report

After a blank first half, the game came alive after the restart as Ellesmere Port’s, ‘hold firm and hit on the break’ approach paid dividends as they took a surprise lead through Hannah Perry early in the second half spurring United’s women into a decisive response. Within ten minutes the reds were 3-1 up with a brace from Shellby Wolstencroft and header from Jade Parker. Further strikes from Olivia Greenhalgh and Kirsty Chambers and an unfortunate late own goal by Katy Maddock extended United’s unbeaten league run and top of the table status.

An inauspicious start to the game saw no meaningful threats on either goal until Chambers cut in from the right across the 18 yard line before driving a low, left foot shot across Charlotte Perry in the visitors goal but just wide of the post on 7 minutes.

A pattern of play, one of FC United pressure and dominance of possession against dogged, disciplined Ellesmere Port defending, ensued for the rest of a goalless first half with the home side coming close on only a few occasions; Parker losing out to Perry in a couple of chases on goal, Wolstencroft forcing Perry into a good save under her bar, Chambers driving just over the bar from 20 yards and Greenhalgh striking the post from a similar range.

The second half opened in a similar vein as good work down the left saw Chambers curl a low cross into the danger area and Parker scuffed her shot into the grateful arms of Perry. Charlotte Perry cleared long to her namesake Hannah who broke beyond the United defence and with Fran Davies and Chelsea Patient in hot pursuit, the striker chose to shoot early from just outside the area and her effort flew over the leap of Chloe Williams to set up a potential ‘smash and grab’ raid on Broadhurst Park.

The goal against however, served to spark the home side onto another level of potency that had been lacking until this point and three minutes after going behind Wolstencroft volleyed the equaliser from six yards after excellent work down the right to deliver the killer pass by Parker. Wolstencroft grabbed her second and United the lead on the hour after receiving the ball on the edge of the area, jinking around Maddock and firing towards the bottom corner with Perry getting a hand to the shot but not enough to prevent it crossing the line.

Two became three on 62 minutes as good work down the left by Wolstencroft and Chambers allowed the Captain to clip a cross over Perry who had come near post leaving Parker to rush in and head home unopposed from two yards out.

United were now playing with freedom and purposeful endeavour and after striking the woodwork from range in the first half Greenhalgh had time and space from 20 yards to loft her effort over Perry and in at the far post on 67 minutes for United’s fourth of the half and game.

Ellesmere Port had little answer but tightened up sufficiently to prevent any further goals until the last five minutes. Amy Vyas slid a perfect pass down the inside left channel into the stride of Chambers who fired unerringly beyond Perry and with just a few minutes remaining Parker capped an outstanding performance driving into the area and crossing into the six yard area with Maddock attempting to cut out the cross but inadvertently and unfortunately deflecting the ball beyond her keeper. United forced a corner on 90 minutes and barely had time to take it as referee Josh Gordon called time on a satisfactory afternoons endeavour.

Next Sunday the reds travel to Ellesmere Port for the reverse league fixture before a trip to Didsbury in the County Cup a week later. If you have never seen the Women away why not get yourself on the road and see what you’ve been missing.

Report by Rob Fullen

FC Player of the game: Jade Parker – tireless performance up front and most effectively prompting and driving attacks from midfield as the game matured. Scorer of one and provider of two goals to cap an excellent performance.
