Match Report

FC United suffered their first defeat of the season as they went down 1-0 to Salford City at Moor Lane on Tuesday evening thanks to a well taken first half strike from Mike Phenix.

The victory for the home team was more than a fair reflection of the game as a whole but having said that United will feel they may have been able to take something away from the game had they done better with a couple of second half chances.

But there’s no doubt that the first half belonged to the Ammies, who began strong and could have had a few goals before the interval with James Poole putting in a brilliant performance in the number 10 role, dictating the game and giving a dangerous feel to every attack that the home team had.

A superb solo run by Jordan Hulme cut through the FC United defence and it looked as though Hulme had capped it off as his low effort looked to be going in before being superbly saved by the ever alert Dave Carnell.

With Salford looking dangerous with every attack there was a little nervousness when FC had the ball, feeling that any mistake could be punished on the counter attack and this was how the game’s only goal came about.

An FC United corner was just about cleared from the home team’s box after a scramble in the goal and the quick break saw the ball played to Phenix on the right hand side of the box and the former Southport man put his shot right in the bottom corner leaving Carnell no chance.

After the break FC United got into the swing of things and when Jason Gilchrist was played into the box he should have done better with his effort but couldn’t manage to get his shot on target from inside the box.

The introduction of Tom Greaves and George Thomson from the bench gave the team a stability and assurance on the ball. The men in white grew into the game as the hosts looked to have settled for for their single goal lead.

But for all the good play, there wasn’t any chances of any note and Jay Lynch in the Salford goal didn’t have too much that troubled him. In fact, the home team were the ones to go closest late on - forcing another good reaction save from Carnell to keep the difference at just a single goal.

Defeat will always be a bitter pill to swallow, but there were undoubted positives to be taken away from the game. The Reds must now dust themselves off and look to get back to the decent form from the first three games when they welcome Worcester City to Broadhurst Park on Saturday afternoon.

Website man of the match: Dave Carnell – Pulled off two notable, top-drawer saves to keep the game at one goal and keep the possibility of getting something from the game alive.
