Match Report

FC United scored two late goals to come from behind and win 2-1 at Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday afternoon - the Reds’ fourth consecutive victory.

The Reds were 1-0 down at halftime but a Jerome Wright penalty levelled things with seven minutes to go and Harry Winter poached a winner in stoppage time.

Trinity had the first sight of goal when a cross from the right was met by the head of Matthew Wilson but he put the ball over the bar. The home skipper, Nathan Jarman, was looking a handful and he brought out the best of Reds goalkeeper Dave Carnell on 13 minutes. Jarman beat the offside trap and looked like he couldn’t miss but his shot was pushed wide thanks to a world class save from the FC custodian.

The home side did take the lead when the ball was cutback to Jarman who rolled the ball into the far corner. The goal spurred FC into action as the Reds started to play round the Trinity box.

The game exploded into controversy just after the half hour when Harry Winter fed the hall to Jason Gilchrist who rounded George Willis only for the keeper to bring him down. The ball fell to George Thomson who put it wide but the referee should probably have already pointed to the spot.

The protests continued from the touch line, with the official telling FC United manager Karl Marginson: "No way was it a penalty," thus ruling out the possibility of him playing the advantage.

The non-decision certainly helped to up the FC United game as they peppered the home goal. Thomson stinging the keeper’s fingers with a free-kick and Gilchrist rolling the ball agonisingly past the far post.

The second half continued in a similar vein with FC pressing but it took to the 73rd minute for FC to trouble the keeper with Gilchrist firing straight at him.

With six minutes left and time looking to run out, FC United were handed a lifeline when a shot from the edge of the box hit a home defender and Mr Wood this time pointed to the spot for handball.

It was probably a generous decision, maybe the first half decision was on the official’s mind? Wright stepped up to convert the penalty for the equaliser.

With the game into injury time there was yet more drama as a cross from the right by Dale Tonge was met by Winter who saw his shot wonderfully saved by Willis. The rebound fell back to Winter who slammed the ball into the net to claim the three points for the Reds.

Website man of the match - Harry Winter. Another all action performance in the FC United midfield topped off with the vital winning goal.
