Match Report

FC United returned to winning ways with an entertaining and hard fought 3-2 victory at Boston United on Saturday afternoon courtesy of a Tom Greaves brace and the winner from substitute Jason Gilchrist.

On three minutes, Greaves had an early sight on goal when he shot straight at Dion-Curtis Henry. The home side then started to see quite a bit of the ball, Gregg Smith heading over from close range.

With five minutes on the clock, FC debutant goalkeeper John Musangu came racing out of his area to clear, he missed the ball which fell to Jay Rollins who happily for The Reds fired across the goal and not into it.

Three minutes later these two players continued their tussle with Musangu blocking a shot from Rollins. The game was breathless and there were chances at either end, George Thompson seeing a free-kick beaten away by Henry.

It was FC United that took the lead with a good move down the left involving Sam Sheridan and Matthew Wolfenden. Wolfenden crossed to the far post where Greaves tapped into an empty net.

On 27 minutes, The Pilgrims drew level in a controversial way when Jason St Juste was adjusted to have been tripped by Dale Tonge, though the FC United defender claimed there was no contact. Liam Agnew converted the spot kick.

Just after the half hour, the visitors from Manchester retook the lead when a cross from Chantler wasn’t collected by Henry and Greaves headed the ball into the empty net. It took Boston just five minutes to draw level again when Rollins broke free on the left, cut in and fired a shot into the far side of the goal.

Just as the crowd was looking forward to half time to take a breath or two, Tom Eckersley almost gave FC United the lead again but he saw his header clawed from the line by Henry.

Boston started the second half as the stronger side but didn’t really test the FC goal. As the half wore on, FC United grew in confidence, Wolfenden almost restoring the lead as he raced onto a ball forward but he saw the ball tipped wide by Henry.

This was Wolfenden’s last touch of the ball as he was replaced by Gilchrist, who took no tine getting into the game, firing the ball over the bar and seeing a goal bound shot blocked.

On 69 minutes, the FC United pressure paid off. A ball over the top was inadvertently played by a Boston defender past his keeper and into the path of Gilchrist who tapped home to make the score 3-2.

As the game wore on, FC saw more chances, Greaves firing wide and Gilchrist curling a shot just wide of the far post. In injury time, Kieran Glynn played in Greaves on goal but he saw Henry tip his shot wide.

This was a much needed win for FC United, and will certainly give the players confidence going into a tough week with games against Harrogate Town and AFC Fylde.

Website man of the match: Harry Winter - a typical performance from Winter, strong in the tackle, breaking down Boston attacks and using the ball well to set up FC United moves.
