Match Report

Lowe blow seals 2-0 victory over Stockport County

FC United continued their unbeaten start to the season with a fine 2-0 victory over Stockport County at Broadhurst Park on Friday evening thanks to goals from Matthew Wolfenden and Nathan Lowe (who scored with his first touch of the ball).

County had themselves come into the game unbeaten and with a 100% record they started the game the brighter of the two teams, looking confident on the ball and especially dangerous on either flank.

The match was played at a great pace and fast became a great footballing spectacle, but off the field this was being undermined by a small mindless few in the away end who tore down the FC United flags (and our giant scarf) down from the rafters.

This seemed to fire the FC fans in the stands up and the noise levels inside Broadhurst Park went up considerably this seemingly having an effect on the pitch as the home team grew into the game and looked like they could make something happen.

That something came just after the half hour mark as a deep ball from the left flank found Matthew Wolfenden of the far side of the box, who with a superb first time strike thundered the ball home and gave the Reds the lead at the break.

As the second half began the game carried on where it left off with the home team looking stronger and increasingly confident with each passing minute.

With this the chances came and the Reds will have felt they could and possibly should have been two up when Sam Sheridan’s effort hit the legs of County goalkeeper Ben Hinchcliffe before crashing onto the bar and then down less than a yard in front of the goal line.

Captain Jerome Wright seems to love these big games and really raises his game and this was no exception as he looked dangerous on the left throughout. Wright could have got the second himself as Dale Johnson played him in but Hinchcliffe was quick off his line and blocked at Wright’s feet to send the ball out for a corner.

Desperate to get something from the game County got themselves going again as the game reached the final fifteen minutes and despite turning the screw they couldn’t find a way past a resolute and much stronger looking FC United defence who themselves put up their second straight clean sheet.

But the hero of the game was Nathan Lowe who replaced Sam Sheridan on 85 minutes and forty seconds later was running towards the St Mary’s Road End arms aloft after firing home from outside the box with his very first touch.

The win was more than deserved for FC United who perhaps had not had the rub of the green that their performances in the draws against Chorley and AFC Telford had deserved earlier in the week.

Manager Karl Marginson will undoubtedly be looking for his players and supporters to take this momentum into what promises to be another great encounter against local rivals Salford City on Tuesday night at Moor Lane.

Website man of the match: Jerome Wright – Mr FC United steps up in these big games and tonight was no different as the captain led by example to seal a well deserved victory.
