Match Report

FC United ensured their best ever league finish with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday afternoon in front of a bumper crowd of 4,064.

Despite being well beaten by a rampant FC United team on the day, Gainsborough managed to hold onto their place in the league thanks to Worcester City’s defeat at champions AFC Fylde, ensuring a party mood with both sets of fans.

Trinity started the game well, looking like a team that had come to fight for their safety and had the lead inside the first ten minutes as Chris Salt headed home, unmarked in the Reds six-yard box.

After a slow start the Reds grew into the game, eager to put on a show for the big crowd and after a period of good pressure they found themselves level as Jerome Wright fired a ball across the six-yard box, which was put into the back of the net by Matthew Wolfenden.

Despite being on the front foot for most of the first half the game remained level at the break but a quick start to the second half and goals from George Thomson and Matthew Wolfenden saw the Reds 3-1 within ten minutes of the restart and made sure of the three points.

Thomson deservedly picked up both the Russell Delaney supporters player of the season and FCUth player of the season awards at the end of the game, and celebrated his awards with a spectacular strike from outside the box which left Trinity ‘keeper Tom Nicholson no chance.

Wolfenden grabbed his second minutes later, going in bravely for a 50/50 ball with Nicholson in the six-yard box, just getting there first to bundle the ball over the line but picking up a knock for his efforts.

The confidence was clear to see with the football being played by the men in Red and the performance matched the result with some really good football being played and a real look of danger with every attack.

Jerome Wright marked his 399th appearance for the club with a goal late in the second half, and as he’s done so many times during those record appearances he turned provider on the next attacking laying the ball off for Thomson who had a simple finish for his second and FC United’s fifth.

As FC’s fifth went in there strangely looked as though there was a party starting in the away end, as the news came through the Fylde had gone 4-2 up against Worcester and ensured Gainsborough’s place in the league once again next season.

The victory meant the Reds bettered last season’s points total by a single point, but the performance and the performances in the past few weeks have given a bright outlook for next season. The Reds will undoubtedly be looking to carry that confidence into Thursday nights cup final against Stalybridge as we look to finish the season with a piece of silverware.

Website Man of the Match: George Thomson – Deservedly picked up the two player of the season awards after the game, and his first goal was one of the best strikes seen all season.
