Match Report

FC United were beaten 3-0 by promotion chasing Halifax Town at Broadhurst Park on Saturday afternoon in front of a bumper crowd of 3,149.

The spring sunshine shone down on Moston but there were few rays of light in the performance for the hosts. The Reds were second best throughout against a team that never really got out of second gear whilst earning a comfortable win.

The game was over as a contest at halftime as the visitors had a 3-0 lead with two late goals in quick succession just before the break. The Shaymen had opened the scoring after just nine minutes as Dion Charles cut in from the left and curled the ball around David Carnell with a strike that was so impressive it earned pockets of applause from the home crowd.

Despite being on the back-foot for the majority of the first half, there was a feeling that if the game went into the break with just a goal difference then the Reds would surely be in with a fight in the second half.

Any such feeling was quickly removed as Halifax netted twice in three minutes just before the break. Andy Sinnott fired in from the edge of the box and then a quick free-kick released Liam King who slotted past Carnell to make it 3-0 and all but kill off the game.

Manager Karl Marginson made three changes at the interval, including giving a debut to Tomi Adeloye. The former Stoke City youth team forward looked a real strong, physical presence and gave a good account of himself in difficult circumstances.

Chances were few and far between in the second half as both teams seemingly settled for the result early on after a bright start to the second period from the home team.

The visitors had a string of good chances to add to the score late on but Carnell was keen to not let them add to the three they’d got in the first half.

The Shaymen have a 100% record in all four competitive games between the two teams and move up to third in the table. For the Reds, it’s a case of looking to get back to winning ways as they make the short trip to Curzon Ashton on Monday evening.

Website Man of the Match: David Carnell – Produced a string of great saves, which kept the score down to three, following on from his recent good performances since returning to the team.
