Match Report

A second half header from Tom Greaves was the only goal of the game as FC United overcame a tough Hereford FC side 1-0 in front of a crowd of 1,050 at Broadhurst Park on Saturday.

Despite there being two league steps between the two teams the Bulls were a strong opposition in what proved to be a closely fought friendly match, but Greaves’ goal gave the Reds revenge for the 1-0 defeat away to Hereford last year.

The close nature of the game meant that both sides cancelled each other out for large periods of the first half and the singing between the two sets of fans on the terrace at the St Mary’s Road End may have been the highlight of the first 45 minutes.

The visiting team had a great chance to break the deadlock when a mix up in the United defence presented the ball to Ross Staley who could only volley the ball just wide of Dave Carnell’s goal.

The Bulls began the second half strongly and a superb solo run from Joe Tumelty was denied the finish it deserved when substitute ‘keeper Adriano Basso strongly pushed the ball wide for a corner.

This seemed to wake the Reds up and they began to go through the gears, taking control of the game and looking the likelier to break the deadlock the longer the game went on.

Tom Greaves had entered the game at the break and the in-form forward had FC United’s first clear cut chance as he turned at the edge of the box, quickly getting his shot away but dragging his effort just wide of the far post.

With four goals from the first four pre-season game Greaves is a man playing with the form and confidence that forwards get from getting goals and he must have thought he had opened the scoring as he broke free, slotting the ball past Hereford goal keeper Martin Horsell but saw his effort ruled out for what must have been the closest of offside decisions.

With just over 20 minutes remaining Greaves did get his goal as a ball from the right was flicked on at the near post by Matthew Walwyn. Greaves then got his head to the ball for the simplest of goals to give FC United a deserved 1-0 win.

With still over two weeks left until the start of the season, both teams became a little tired after the goal and the pace of the game dropped off with little. Both sets of fans continued the great atmosphere off the pitch, reinforcing the special relationship between the two clubs which began last year and will hopefully continue for many years to come.

For the Reds it was a second win in three days after Thursday’s 4-1 win at Nelson and Margy’s men will be looking to carry the fine form into Tuesday night’s game at Mossley before we welcome Rochdale to Broadhurst Park next weekend.

Website man of the match: Tom Greaves – Five goals in five pre-season appearances for Greaves, who looks confident and hungry for goals every time the ball comes in his direction.
