Match Report
The weather gave us a surprise as FC United Reserves travelled to Buxton, much of the game being played in blizzard conditions. The reds got back to their normal form, winning the game 4-1 with two goals from Will Shawcross and the two JB’s; Jamal Branker and Joel Bestley.

FC United dominated much of the early possession but along with the snow came a strong wind and Buxton played with it in the first half. They used it to their advantage with long balls behind a high defensive line, chased enthusiastically. One such break was cleared away from the FC goal in the fifth minute. So whilst it was FC United that carried most of the threat it was no real surprise when Buxton took the lead. A 23rd minute free kick from near the half way line was headed home by Anthony Hunter.

From then FC United took control of the game and Buxton rarely threatened again. Jack Ward offered a constant nuisance value, coming close twice in the next five minutes as they sought an equaliser. It came on 35 minutes when Will Shawcross cutting in from the left set up Ward. His shot was saved but Branker fired home the rebound. Five minutes later the reds took the lead. Jack O’Leary set up Shawcross whose shot looped over the keeper and into the far corner of the goal.

The second half saw FC United take almost total control; Shawcross and Ward competing to be next on the score sheet, the former had a great chance on 59 minutes when clear of the defence he shot over the keeper but also cleared the bar. Mike Jones had a shot saved low by the post in the 64th minute and was then provider, first for Shawcross to make it 3-1 two minutes later and then in the 79th minute when Bestley used his strength to get the better of a Buxton defender and fire home.

In the 82nd minute Buxton had their one chance of the half, a free kick on the edge of the penalty area which was easily saved. Then it was straight up the other end and a Dean Hope strike seemed destined for the top corner before being spectacularly saved by Aaron Dixon in the home goal.

Shawcross had another great chance, heading a Dean Hope cross towards the bottom corner but somehow it was kept out. That left the final five minutes free for a cameo appearance by Rhodri Giggs. He had a chance saved in the 87th minute and his summer was cruelly spoilt by the referee blowing for full time as he broke beyond the Buxton defence in anticipation of the pass that was heading in his direction.

The young reds now finish their season with a trip to Stalybridge on Thursday May 5th, second place in the Lancashire League South Division secured.
