Match Report
After a 3-0 victory over Burnage Metro in their opening County Cup group game last month, United’s women sealed a second consecutive cup victory by the same scoreline, defeating Beechfield United at Broadhurst Park on Minithon day.

A depleted yet highly resilient Beechfield team saw the visitors hold a dominant FC United to a goalless first hour with the reds scoring three goals without reply in the final third of the game. Strikes from Fran Davies, Shellby Wolstencroft and Beth Scholey on 60, 70 and 80 minutes respectively, were enough to set up a group decider with Middleton Athletic early in the New Year.

On a cool autumnal afternoon with the hint of rain on the stiffening breeze, United kicked off towards the St Mary’s Road end with Beth Tattersall attacking down the left and early chances fell to Wolstencroft and Beth Scholey with the Beechfield custodian, Shauna Smith proving an effective last line of defence.

It was 10 minutes before the visitors broke into the FC United half and were presented with a free kick that Captain Sue Howard lofted dangerously into the area catching team mate Sophie Wainwright unawares as the ball drifted harmlessly wide without troubling Mary Priestner in the United goal. The tide of one-way traffic resumed as Hannah Dobie, Wolstencroft and Davies all went close with Wolstencroft carving yet another chance, falling heavily and requiring treatment following a brave dive at her feet by Smith in the Beechfield goal.

Chelsea Patient and Davies surged forward relentlessly from the back at every opportunity throughout the half and the industry of Aimee Cooke ensured Beechfield remained entrenched in their own half but despite wave after wave of red pressure the visitors stood firm.

Tattersall and Wolstencroft worked the ball well to Charlie Evans cutting in from the left and once again, Smith saved well with Tattersall striking the bar after being released by Jess McCarrick moments later. Jess Tonge, Dobie and Scholey all saw Smith deny them and Beechfield held firm taking the game goal less into the break.

The second half followed in much the same vein and finally Beechfield resistance was broken as half time substitutes combined with Adora Yau flicking on a Beth Hayes corner for Davies to fire home from four yards out on the hour. Ten minutes later and Wolstencroft, thwarted so many times by the excellent Smith all afternoon, finally had her nemesis beaten as Scholey floated a ball over the top splitting the centre halves and into the path of Wolstencroft who fired early, hard and low into the bottom corner from 18 yards.

On 80 minutes Scholey put the game beyond all doubt as Hayes slotted through a perfect pass for the midfielder to burst into the area unopposed and fire the ball beyond Smith at her near post. To underline FC United’s total dominance to the very last, Yau volleyed just over on 90 minutes and Beechfield deserve tremendous credit for a sterling rear-guard action that prevented a modest defeat becoming a rout.

FC United return to league action next Sunday as they welcome Liverpool Marshalls Feds Reserves to Broadhurst Park. Get yourself to our football ground and support the reds as they look for consistency in their first league campaign at regional level.
